NEWS FROM OUR CHURCH BOARD MEETING
FEB. 11, 2020

Refugee Sponsorship – Barb Merritt and Greg Daly advised the Board that both Ivan and Sherry have found accommodation in Toronto.  Ivan has moved in and Sherry will be doing so at the beginning of March.  This is an exciting project, and we appreciate the work of Barb Merritt, Reena Tabing, Manuel Goehring, and Rev. Greg Daly as our representatives on the sponsorship committee.

Our Living Faith Story – We are moving ahead with the process to have the appointment of Rev. Greg Daly turned into a long-term call.  The first step is for the congregation to approve our Living Faith Story, the story of how we, as a congregation, live out our faith.  A draft was approved by the Church Board and will now come to the congregation for approval at our Annual Meeting on March 8, 2020.  It has been posted on our website, along with the Minister’s Position Description (https://www.bbuc.ca/church-profile).  Some printed copies will be available on Sunday, February 23, 2020, for those who are not able to access them online.  Please take the time to read them and think about all the ways you contribute to our ministries as we strive to be a congregation that reaches out and makes a difference.

Please note that the Vision and Mission Statement in the Living Faith Story includes an extra point about our affirming ministries (Toby’s Place and Dorothy’s Place) which began after we originally approved our Vision and Mission Statement in 2015.  The congregation will also be asked to approve that change at our Annual Meeting.

2020 Annual Meeting – Our Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, March 8, following our Worship Service.  We will ask congregation members to pick up a snack quickly and return to the sanctuary so that we can get the meeting underway promptly after the service ends.  The Annual Report will be distributed prior to the meeting.  If you didn't received a printed copy of the report and would like one, please contact the church office - bbucoffice@bellnet.ca, 416-694-4081.

There will be an enhanced coffee hour that day and assistance is kindly requested.  Please see the sign-up sheet on the Welcome Desk.
BFB - BLUFFS FOOD BANK

We wish to extend a special thanks to all who made such generous donations during the Christmas Season.  Your generosity was "over the top" and our shelves are full.

WHITE SUGAR is the requested food item for January and February.  This will be a SWEET treat for our families in January and February.  Sugar has been "on sale" in recent weeks, so you may even find a bargain for your bucks.

Please visit us at our website for more information about how you too can make a financial donation and receive an automatic income tax receipt.  We will gratefully use these donations to purchase sugar and fill some of those nutritious holes to complete hampers when we find things for wholesale and sale prices.

Blessings,
Gail Barkic (Volunteer CEO)
"2SLGBTQ+ YOUTH VOICES OF SCARBOROUGH" FILM - NEW

The film is launching on Monday, February 24, and shows the diversity of a 2SLGBTQ+ community which, until the space came along, had nowhere to meet and talk.

The film captures youth at Toby’s Place, a drop-in centre in the basement of the Birchcliff Bluffs United Church.  They speak about gender identity, sexuality, and other subjects.  Scarborough’s queer youth “aren’t a monolith” but “a lot of smaller things” and very diverse, says Paisley Sears, who edited the film and shot most of the video footage.

Please visit the following page for the full story:
https://www.toronto.com/whatson-story/9857601-film-shows-scarborough-2slgbtq-youth-at-toby-s-place-aren-t-a-monolith-/?s=e.

Film event organizers (front row) Dee Stoicescu, left, and Ai Yamamoto sit with film participants, in back row, Paisley Sears, left, Christina Dewar, Atlas Rockburn, and James Stewart at Toby's Place in Birchcliff Bluffs United Church.  The films, made by youths, are about the 2SLGBTQ+ experience in Scarborough.

THE KNITTING PILGRIM

Kirk Dunn will be presenting his one-man play, The Knitting Pilgrim, featuring the Stitched Glass tapestries, at Beach United Church, 140 Wineva Avenue, on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at 8 p.m.  Tickets - $20 (show to benefit Community Centre 55).

The large knitted panels, designed in the style of stained-glass windows, look at the commonalities and conflicts of the Abrahamic Faiths – and took Kirk an incredible 15 years to knit.  The play tells the story of Kirk’s artistic and spiritual journey working on this ambitious project about interfaith empathy, and has been seen across Ontario at theatres, churches, and the Aga Khan Museum.
