Neighborhood News
Hello Neighbor!
The trees are turning, the air is crisp. Hmm, that reminds me of honey crisp apples from the Horner Park Farmers Market. Hope to see you at  the last few weeks of the market and enjoying the park’s other fall festivities, or just out and about on these beautiful fall days.

Riverfront Project: No, that's not the fencing for the proposed dog park that went up last week in the southeast corner of Horner Park along Irving Park. It's just the next phase of the $6.2 million Riverfront Restoration Project.

Phase one, which began earlier this year, should be completed next week. That was the work on the eastern end of the park --  removing trees along the lower shoreline and regrading the riverbank. There are several new amenities: a flagstone stairway and canoe landing area just south of the Montrose Ave. bridge, a new jogging path along the top of the slope that extends from the Montrose bridge to the park entrance at California and Irving Park, a stunning new walking path down along the water's edge, and two vernal pools that collect water from several riverfront springs and send it cascading down a  bed of cobblestone rock.

The next phase involves eliminating invasive plant species within the shoreline construction zone as well as grass in the upland area recently fenced along Irving Park. Once the current vegetation is gone, an aggressive planting program will begin. Thousands of native prairie plants will be planted in the two areas as well as replacement trees along the shoreline.

The final result will provide Horner Park patrons for generations to come
with a great restoration initiative, easy access to the water and some of the best amenities available in any riverfront park.

We will keep you updated and the Horner Park Advisory Council will continue posting project updates and details on its website.

CAPS Update

Our beat, Beat 1724, meets every other month (the even-numbered months). The next meeting will be Tuesday, Dec. 9, 7:00 PM, at the Horner Park Field House. Attending your neighborhood Beat meeting can be very informative. Our Beat officers inform us of what is happening in the area, our neighbors discuss what they are experiencing, and together we talk about ways we can keep our community safe.

Keep Your Eyes Open:
Our Beat officers remind us that burglary season is about to begin. As residents, we play a big part in keeping our neighborhood safe; help us continue to do so by reporting suspicious activity when you see it.

Remember: if you need an officer to respond, call 911. If you are unsure, call 911. Our CAPS and beat officers routinely remind us to call 911 to report issues.

Did you know that the number of calls for service in our area informs budget decisions and the number of officers we have in our district? When we don't call to report issues, we are impacting the number of officers we have on our streets.

Crime Prevention: The best method of crime prevention is the Nosy Neighbor - don't assume someone else has already called in suspicious activity! Help us keep the neighborhood safe!

Updates From the 33rd Ward

Zoning MeetingThe 33rd Ward has informed us that a developer has requested to rezone 2940 W Irving Park to allow for a new residential three-flat building. The buildings immediately surrounding this address are single-family homes.

The 33rd Ward is hosting a meeting Monday, Oct. 20 at 7pm at the 33rd Ward office, 3649 N Kedzie. The Alderman and the developer will be present to answer questions about the rezoning request. Community members are invited and encouraged to participate. Representatives from HPWNA will attend the meeting and would love you to attend with us. If you cannot be at the meeting, we'd love to hear what you think of this request - should the Alderman allow the rezoning?
