Neighborhood News
Hello Neighbor!
It truly is spring now. Flowers are up; trees are greening; we've even heard lawnmowers running. Thanks for picking up all that winter leftover mess; what a beautiful neighborhood we have. Show it off!

We'll see you out and about in the neighborhood!
Your Friends at HPWNA

Save the Date: Our annual Spring General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 20 at 7:30 PM at the Horner Park Field House. You won't want to miss this one...

You may have noticed that our neighborhood has been experiencing quite a growth spurt. Homes are not the market long, new homes are being built, home values are
appreciating, and several new and exciting businesses are open or opening in the neighborhood. On May 20, we'll be discussing all of these items!

We'll start off with some short HPWNA business and our Board elections and then jump right into a discussion with area real estate experts talking about how the market is evolving in our neighborhood as well as with area business owners talking about why they chose to invest in our neighborhood and what we can do to help them succeed and bring more businesses in. Participating local b
usinesses include Breakroom Brewery, Ravenswood Animal Hospital, Dovetail Studios for Dance and Fitness, and Windy City Playhouse. Come and meet the owners!

We also will elect a new board for the 2015-2016 year: Candidates are:

  • President: Erin Engstrom
  • 1st Vice President: Gretchen Helmreich
  • 2nd Vice President: Mark Mullen
  • Secretary: Mark Jones
  • Treasurer: John Friedmann
  • In addition, several awesome neighbors have accepted their nominations as Board Members At Large:
    Jen Duncan
    Edwin Gania
    Gregg Jaffe
    Molly Maier
    Emily Mitchell
    Kerry Sayers Doucet

Yes! It's time for TGIF! Our first TGIF will be Friday, May 1st at 6:30 PM. Location has been shared in our private e-group. TGIF's take place on the first Friday of each month. Don't know where we'll be in May? Send us an email if you're not in our private e-group.

Our first Neighborhood Clean Up of 2015 was a major success! A great crew of volunteers scoured Sacramento on April 18. Thanks Neighbors!

Our May Neighborhood Clean Up will be Saturday, May 9th at 10:00 AM. We'll meet at Richmond and Irving Park and clean our way north up Richmond.

HPWNA Board Meetings: The HPWNA Board meets on the second Wednesday of every month, and it is open to the public. Board members talk about what's going on in the neighborhood, things we'd like to see happen, and we also plan our many social events. The location changes each month, alternating between the Horner Park Field House (odd months) and a fun neighborhood location (even months). Our next meeting will be May 13 at 7:30 PM at the Horner Park Field House.

If YOU are interested in becoming more involved in Horner Park West, we would love to have you! Please contact us for more details.

Economic Development

Breakroom Brewery is finally open! Congratulations to the Breakroom team! Breakroom is open Tuesday through Sunday, serving food and beverages. Also check out Heineman Bar Co. on "Epic Bar Builds" on the Discovery Channel and, April 24, on WGN TV’s “Around Town”.

Divvy is coming! 6 new Divvy stations are planned for our immediate area this Spring, including 2 at Horner Park. We're keeping an eye out for them!

If you have any ideas for what businesses you would like to have in our community, we would love to hear from you. In fact, that will be part of the discussion at our May 20 General Spring Meeting. Come and join the conversation.

Horner Park & Area Parks

What is HPAC? The Horner Park Advisory Council (HPAC) is a volunteer organization that oversees fundraising and programming at Horner, Ravenswood Manor, Buffalo, Jacob, and Sunken Garden parks. Congratulations to HPAC who just won $500 from the Chicago Parks Foundation for being one of the top park councils!
Interested in being involved? Check out the different committees on HPAC's contact page.
Mark your calendar for June 20. A night in the park at Horner Park will feature a live band and salsa dancing, a movie, and lots of more fun events! Stay tuned.
Work is continuing on the Riverbank Restoration Project. More herbicide is being applied this month in preparation for more plantings, including new trees.

Just a reminder that the fenced area at the southeast end of the park is not a dog park. That is part of the Oak Savannah/riverbank restoration work, and herbicides have been applied. Even if the gate is open, please do not run your dogs there.

The Horner Park Farmers Market returns, Saturdays, June 6 to October 3. We'll see you at the strawberry stand, or maybe buying rhubarb? Early summer gardens also bring fresh greens and asparagus. Delicious!
Did you know that the market is run by 7 of your neighbors, all of whom are volunteers? Speaking of volunteers, if you'd like to help out this summer, reach out to

Activities: Horner Park has more activities than we can count and publish! Check out the current list by visiting the Registration Site and choosing to filter by location (Horner Park) - so many great offerings for all ages!

Bateman Elementary

Bateman Elementary School has been selected as a 2015 One Fund In School Performance Award winner. Bateman’s Award will consist of an in-school performance of Emerald City Theatre’s “Dragons Love Tacos” and that same day all Pre-K through 3rd grade students will receive a new copy of the book "Dragons Love Tacos." The One Fund is an annual campaign created to help address literacy by inspiring early learners through play and reading.

If you want to see what terrific work is being done by Bateman students, check out this Earth Day video on Bateman’s website. It was done by 6th grade honors students.

CAPS Update

After a few months of trying the new format, there will be a change. Our beat – 1724 -- meeting will be moving back to the Horner Park Field House. Beat 1724 will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of every other month (on odd months) at 6:30 p.m. at the Field House.

Next CAPS meeting is Wednesday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Horner Park Field House.

Attending your neighborhood Beat meeting can be very informative. Our Beat officers talk about what is happening in the area, our neighbors discuss what they are experiencing, and together we talk about ways we can keep our community safe.

33rd Ward

Transportation Action Committee: The Active Transportation Alliance and the City of Chicago Department of Transportation launched a project called Go Albany Park, an educational campaign to help Albany Park residents walk, bike, and use transit more often. According to the Active Trans website, the project is one of five similar programs implemented or planned for Chicago neighborhoods since 2013. The goals of the program are to:

• Reduce drive-alone trips of residents
• Increase trips made by foot, bicycle, transit, and carpool
• Increase the use of bike share, particularly at stations within Albany Park
• Foster a sense of community around walking and biking activities
• Support local businesses and existing community efforts

Pets in Horner Park West

Meet CHARLIE! An Airedale terrier, Charlie is the 75-pound lapdog of Libby Karier & Garry Low on the 4200 block of Mozart. Adopted from Airedale Terrier Rescue & Adoption, Charlie is an expert at making food disappear from counters, energy he needs to keep the yard safe from squirrels and mice. Charlie is a gentle guy, but was abused in a previous life and still does not trust strangers. If you meet us on the street, feel free to talk with us, but please ignore him.

P.S. If you’re into textile arts, there is an annual quilt raffle to benefit National Airedale Rescue. The artwork is amazing. Check out previous years’ quilts here. This year’s fundraiser will be unveiled Aug. 1.
