Meet Stephen Hook

Stephen Hook - a teaching home run
Stephen Hook was already a successful Australian baseball player when he decided to pursue a career as a science and special education teacher. Stephen is encountering more rewarding moments in his teaching career and has never looked back.

From a young age, Stephen was involved in sports coaching as he had an ambition for helping others develop skills in areas he was passionate about. Combined with his fascination for exploring why things work and a love for science, Stephen knew teaching was the job for him.

‘I was drawn to special education after completing the mandatory unit at the University of Newcastle. I went on to complete part of my internship with a learning support class and was thrilled to see the students thrive. Helping my students achieve something they weren’t able to do at the start of the day gave me great satisfaction.’

Stephen not only received financial assistance throughout his studies, but he was guaranteed a permanent job through a Teacher Education Scholarship with the NSW Department of Education.

‘After seeing the scholarship advertised on the teach.NSW website, I submitted an application. Knowing that I had a permanent job once I finished my degree was a satisfying feeling.’

‘Science and special education have many alluring features but I would say the biggest drawcard is the hands-on approach in both of them. New evidence is constantly evolving in both areas, making my job really exciting.’

If you are interested in applying for a scholarship in science or special education, check out the teach.NSW page for more information.
