Life as a rural teacher

Bonny Zacharia
The teach.NSW team spoke with Bonny Zacharia, who started her teaching career as a casual teacher at Broken Hill Public School and now has a permanent position at the school, to gain some insight into her experience.

Bonny had previously completed her university internship at Broken Hill Public School. She loved it so much that she stayed in Broken Hill and contacted the Principal to say she was available for casual work immediately. Bonny stayed with some teachers and friends she had met during her time there.

‘I notified the different schools in the area that I was available. It wasn’t long until I was being called in at least twice a week to work. As a beginning teacher I had a taste of teaching different year groups across several schools - it was a great way to get to know the town and the teaching community.’

After a month of casual teaching, Bonny was offered a Rural Area Relief (RAR) temporary position. A RAR teacher is assigned to schools daily to undertake short term relief duties.

‘I had been an RAR for a year and a temporary teacher for two years when I was offered a permanent classroom teacher role at Broken Hill Public School. It was such a privilege!’

Bonny was provided teacher housing in Broken Hill and has been receiving the 70% rental subsidy through the NSW Department of Education that applies to her location.

‘The rental subsidy is amazing. I moved into the teacher housing block when I was a temporary teacher and I’m still here. This allowed me to connect with other teachers in the area and create life-long friends. I love living and working in a rural community. Everyone looks out for one another and there is always time for a chat.’

Bonny’s advice to others considering rural teaching careers? ‘There is so much support from the teaching community, as many other teachers have also relocated. The need for teachers is greater in rural areas, so take the step and start out casually and a permanent role may become available.’
