Experience rural!
Her university practicum was brief but Madelon Gillham’s experience teaching science at a rural NSW public school gave her rich insights into the benefits of living and working in a rural community.

Madelon’s experiences extended to being taught to drive a tractor by her senior primary industries class – and even to quickly learning how to chase echidnas from the classroom!

One of Madelon’s early impressions was how time spent in the community can have a direct impact on professional life.

`One of my students served me in a shop. As soon as I had interacted with this student outside school they responded differently to me at school. They were immediately more engaged.’

Madelon saw students change and progress as a result of her brief time with them.

`On my last day, a class completed a revision exercise. One of the students, who had initially struggled a little, wrote a detailed response about each method of separating mixtures. He illustrated outstanding knowledge of the subject and was so proud of himself. I felt extremely proud too.’

Her advice to others considering working in a rural school is to `  … go out and experience a rural school first hand and see how delightful it can be.’
