Simon Paterson, Principal of Strathfield South High School and Suzi Langford, Teacher Quality Advisor, Educational Services, NSW Department of Education shared with us their top tips for teachers applying for classroom teacher positions in NSW public schools.

‘The structure of your application will send a message about your efficiency and organisation. Make your application easy to read by using short paragraph statements and bullet points’ says Simon. ‘And don’t forget to unpack the criteria carefully and address each of the verbs used in the criteria’ says Suzi.

Simon adds, ‘An effective overall structure to use is the threefold approach: I believe; I have done; I will do. Rather than using these as headings, use them to guide your response to each criterion. This will enable you to articulate your philosophy of education as defined by the criterion; you are citing your experience related to it (always comment on the impact on student learning that your actions have had); and you will be projecting into the role (ensure that you reference the school’s plan and strategic directions here to personalise your application).'

Suzi similarly recommends implementing the ‘STAR model: Situation, Task, Action, Result’ to structure your response to the selection criteria. The STAR model encourages you to reflect on your action in the classroom and the results or outcomes for students. A point that Simon also emphasises, ‘Never cite an example of experience without commenting on how it benefited students’ he says.
