Meet Paula de Castro

Paula de Castro, school counsellor
The program that changed Paula's life!

Paula de Castro completed a psychological science degree before studying to become a teacher. She worked as a primary teacher for three years before applying for the School Counsellor Metropolitan Sponsorship Program.

'It has been the best university experience I have ever had. The School Counsellor Metropolitan Sponsorship Program changed my life and I truly mean that.'

'I was blown away by the benefits of the program. The financial benefits were better than anything I had come across before. However, it was the tight-knit nature of the classes and the collegial feel that made my university experience such a wonderful one,' she says.

Throughout her teaching career a number of moments inspired Paula to become more involved in student welfare. One in particular stands out:

'A student with a variety of needs came to our school and I did everything to accommodate her and make her comfortable in my classroom. Sometime after, the student’s parents told me she had made her first friends and thanked me for the assistance I’d provided their daughter. I realised that I had played a role in changing this girl’s life and that affected me deeply.'

'The ability to have a strong impact on people’s lives in such a significant way drove me to apply for the program. I am so thankful that it exists and that I got the opportunity to accomplish my dreams,' says Paula.

For those considering school counselling as a career Paula’s advice is, 'Apply, apply, apply and don’t give up. You will not regret it.'
