How David fell in love with rural NSW!

David Wang

David Wang is a mathematics teacher whose invaluable experience on his teaching practicum at Gilgandra High School cemented his decision to leave the city behind for life in a regional town.

‘I was so impressed by the supportive and caring staff, the quality of technology in the classrooms, the facilities and the students that I decide to come back to rural NSW. I took a friend with me to meet the Principal at Bourke High School and we are both working in Bourke this year!’

David found the transition from urban living to rural living surprisingly smooth.

‘The department financially supported my move to Bourke, so it was just a matter of packing my things in my car and getting on my way. I also receive teacher housing, so my rent is approximately $40 a week.’

David settled effortlessly into life in rural NSW and said he has been ‘blown away’ by the welcome he received from the school and the local community.

‘I work with exceptionally talented teachers, staff members, and the executive are very supportive and caring. There are a few first-year teachers too. My neighbours are helpful and considerate and love it when I cook my famous dumplings. I joined a basketball competition, the local SES and I’ve been featured in the local newspaper a number of times.’

‘I couldn’t have asked for a better start and I’d highly recommend teachers come out and experience life in rural NSW for themselves.’

If you’re interested in a career in mathematics, find out if you're eligible to apply for one of the NSW Department of Education scholarships, cadetships or internships.
