On August 29, Cleantech San Diego, San Diego Green Building Council, and the San Diego 2030 District will host an Education Series event on Energy Efficiency Policies and the Cleantech Opportunity. State and federal energy efficiency policies calling for solar on new construction and annual energy benchmarking disclosures, among other standards, are creating an exciting opportunity for buildings to leverage clean technologies like never before. This discussion with energy efficiency experts – from solar and ZNE to reporting and IoT – will explore what the sustainable built environment of tomorrow looks like and how San Diego’s cleantech industry will be key to realizing that future. Speakers include Ralph DiNola of the New Buildings Institute, Dawn Baker of H.G. August 18: Veteran's Energy Seminar - Educating Veterans on Energy Security

On August 18, a Veteran's Energy Seminar will be held in San Diego to educate military veterans on global energy security challenges and to inspire continued service to the country through careers in the energy industry, policy, and entrepreneurship. The program includes classroom lectures and panels with local experts from business, government, and academia. August 30: American-Made Solar Prize Information Session in San Diego

The American-Made Solar Prize is a $3 million prize competition created by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and operated by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory that is designed to accelerate and sustain American solar innovation through a series of three contests: the Ready! Set! and Go! Contests. On August 30, Cleantech San Diego will host an information session to hear about this new prize competition from Ammar Qusaibaty of DOE’s Solar Energy Technologies Office. The presentation will address eligibility criteria, prizes, and the application process for each of the contests. Applications for the first contest (Ready!) are due October 5. September 13: Bringing Our San Diego Story to the Global Climate Action Summit

Cleantech San Diego has been selected to host an affiliate event as part of Governor Brown’s Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco in September. The Summit will bring together leaders from around the world to galvanize a global movement for climate action. Cleantech San Diego’s affiliate event, being held at Perkins Coie’s offices in San Francisco, will share how cities in the San Diego region are working with industry to embrace the benefits of a clean energy economy. Speakers include Serge Dedina, Mayor of Imperial Beach; Peter Zahn, Councilmember for the City of Solana Beach; Margaret Leinen, Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography; Jason Anderson, President and CEO of Cleantech San Diego; Cody Hooven, Chief Sustainability Officer for the City of San Diego; and Nicola Hedge, Director of Environment Initiatives for The San Diego Foundation. San Diego Regional Energy Innovation Network Marks Two Year Anniversary

The San Diego Regional Energy Innovation Network (SDREIN) recently celebrated its 2nd Anniversary. The program has reached a number of significant milestones since its launch in July 2016 including:
  • Attracting 110 SDREIN applicants
  • Conducting 15 Entrepreneur Intake Sessions that reviewed 33 companies of which 27 have been accepted
  • Celebrating three positive exits
  • Accepting the program's first companies from Imperial and Riverside counties
Additionally, SDREIN companies have also achieved a number of milestones including:
  • Being led by a diverse C-Suite leadership, including three female CEOs
  • Employing 149 people
  • Raising $17.9 million in private capital and $1.2 million in public funding

Thank you to the partners, Technical Advisory Committee members, and regional stakeholders who have supported SDREIN and helped its entrepreneurs establish a solid foundation upon which to grow and accelerate the commercialization of breakthrough energy technologies that will broadly benefit California’s electric ratepayers. Cleantech San Diego member company Measurabl has been recognized by Assemblymember Todd Gloria as the 2018 Small Business of the Year for California's 78th District. Congratulations to Measurabl, which continues to grow its efforts to make sustainability accessible to all. Video

SDG&E Seeks to Install 340 New EV Chargers at Schools, Parks, and Beaches

This week, SDG&E submitted an application to the California Public Utilities Commission for approval to implement two pilot programs to make EV charging stations more readily available. One pilot would bring chargers to local parks and beaches, and the other to local schools and educational institutions, including K-12 campuses, vocational schools, community colleges, and universities. If approved, the pilot programs would allow SDG&E to install about 340 chargers at approximately 50 yet-to-be-determined sites and help fill in gaps in the existing charging network. San Diego Airport Wins Innovation Award

The Airport Innovation Accelerator established by American Association of Airport Executives has recognized San Diego International Airport (SAN) with the 2018 Most Innovative Large Hub Airport Award. SAN was honored for innovations in environmental sustainability, as well setting up a unique Innovation Lab in the former Commuter Terminal. Two of SAN’s unique environmental innovations are its air conditioning condensate water collection – a Cleantech San Diego-supported pilot project – and its Good Traveler carbon-offset programs. Read More

#SDEnergyInnovators Spotlight:
Aquacycl Closes $2 Million Seed Round

San Diego Regional Energy Innovation Network company Aquacycl has sucessfully closed a $2 million seed round of fundraising. Aquacycle provides modular and scalable systems for energy neutral, decentralized wastewater treatment that can provide industrial customers 50%-85% savings for onsite treatment. The newly secured seed funds will be used to scale Aquacycl system production, expand business development, and deliver systems to their first commercial customers. Aquacycl will be opening their Series A fundraising round in late fall 2018.

MetroConnect is an export assistance program led by World Trade Center San Diego. Now in its fourth year, this program provides services to assist with international expansion efforts. In addition to these services, select companies will be awarded $10,000 and have the opportunity to compete for a $35,000 grand prize.
