Welcome to the fifth edition of the ChangingEmployment eNewsletter

This is an eventful period for our ESRs in the Changing Employment programme and so that is nothing new.  Coming at the end of the second year since everyone took up their posts in March 2013, the volume of activity everyone has been involved in has been pretty remarkable.  The current edition of the Newsletter, edited by Mona Meurer, lays out in clear terms the development of everyone’s work commitments.  Not only are people engaged in the full activities of the Network, including their specific Theme work, but their own doctoral work is gathering apace. While field work and secondments are well in train, conferences have been attended and are in the pipe line, articles for journals and books are either published or are in press, and participation in activities beyond the Network are being established or deepened. In short, the Network, while only a great notion for the seniors team back in 2012, is now fully functional and is, effectively, the creation of all the ESRs and ERs.  Quite a remarkable achievement by all our new academics.  The Newsletter shows quite concretely the real nature of their achievements and future agenda.  It must also be recorded that critical to all this has been the activities of our Post Docs, first, Dr Maria Richea (Evry) and Dr Olena Fedyuk (Strathclyde) who have been hugely fundamental to the maintaining the focus of the Theme groups and ensuring they work to their Deliverable time line.  A pretty fine achievement.  Second, we have the pleasure of now adding to this the work and participation of Dr Julia Kubisha who has recently been appointed the Post Doc for Theme 3 (Goteborg).  Julia has really now been at the forefront of ensuring the same drive and delivery for Theme 3.

ChangingEmployment publications

The Employment Challenges in Europe: Initial Findings report (2015) report highlights the initial research findings by Theme (1, 2 and 3) and the achieved progress in identifying the employment challenges that arise in Europe

The 1st Changing Employment Research Paper has now been published and is available to download for free.  The paper entitled "Decentralization, Union Power and Contention Episodes: the Case of Dacia Workers" (2015) written by ESR3 Dragos Adascalitei & Stefan Guga, CEU, Center for Policy Studies - Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, falls under the network theme 1. management and employees.  The paper discusses the case of successful union organizing in one automotive plant in Romania.

The Research Paper Series has been developed to encourage debate and disseminate activities associated with the network. The central remit of the Research Paper Series is to explore and encourage debate on the changing nature of employment in Europe in the context of challenges, threats and opportunities for employees and employers.  

ESR Personal Reflections

ChangingEmployment Network Events

ER1 Dr. Maria Richea and Professor Paul Stewart have organized a Changing Employment training on NVivo10 & Project Management. The event took place at Grand Hotel Excelsior Valletta, Malta between 5-7 of March, 2015. The program included NVivo training by  the QSR International trainer Mr. Ben Meehan, a career management session by Mrs. Magdalena Chomicka and a project management session led by Mr. Gearóid Ó Machail. read more
 
The third annual colloquium 'Research Findings' is planned for 23-25 November 2015 in University of Strathclyde, UK which will focus on early stage researchers research findings. As part of this event there will be a project open day, all are welcome to attend. Further information about this event will be available very soon.

Other Upcoming events which network researchers are involved in are:
  • Call for Papers for the Conference Stream "WORK PRACTICES AND QUALITY OF WORKat The Second International Interdisciplinary Conference on Research on Work, hosted by University of Turku,  19-21 August 2015, Finland - theme three have been accepted for a panel stream.
  • The University of Oviedo is organising a Changing Employment session as part of the XVII World Economy Meeting that is hosted by the University of Oviedo and will take place in Gijón, Spain, 3-5 June 2015.  Abstracts are invited to until April 10, 2015, via mail to Holm Köhler (hkohler@uniovi.es).
  • ESRC Seminar 5: Regulation and the firm part of the ESRC Seminar Series on Workplace Regulation, Employment and the State will take place on 5 June 2015 at the University of Newcastle. Further information and booking
  • Changing Employment Brown Bag Lunch Series at the ETUI - The European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) is host institution to several network fellows who visit Brussels for their secondments in different points of time during the Changing Employment Program. ESRs who have visited or will visit the ETUI now have the opportunity to present their research during a series of brown bag lunch (BBL) events organised at the ETUI.
    The first Changing Employment BBL session will take place on 1 April 2014, 12.30-14.00 at the ETUI in Brussels. ESRs Mateusz Karolak (currently on secondment with the ETUI) and Karima Aziz (on secondment from April) will present their work on migrant workers from Poland
