Welcome to the eighth and final edition of the ChangingEmployment eNewsletter

Although our ESRs have in most cases completed their employment contracts they are still central participants in the ChangingEmployment programme which runs through this year until November 30th.  It is with great pleasure mixed with sadness to report that they are now in the finishing stages of the programme.  This was an additionally demanding programme assignment, and so unlike any other doctoral programme, in that our Doctoral and Post-Doctoral colleagues have had to work on a complicated aspect of their role as Marie Curie ESRs (and ERs in two cases (Dr Maria Richea based at Evry and Dr Olena Fedyuk at Strathclyde) .  Working through to completion of a PhD is tough enough but they have shown great resilience in developing an independent thematic oeuvre under the guidance of Dr Richea (Theme 1 (On management and Employees), Dr Fedyuk (Theme 2 on Migration: inclusion and exclusion) and now, in the case of a third thematic team, Dr Julia Kubisa (Employee Wellbeing and Work Life Quality) based in Goteborg.  The teams will deliver exciting publications over the next 12 months or so in the areas of comparative migration research, employment regulation in Europe (to be published by one of our Associate Partners, ETUI).  The post-docs too have not had an easy time.  In contrast to regular Post doc posts, this was a training position where they were undergoing training in the job expectations of academics – on occasion having to commit to work that only seasoned pros have to endure.  Their work entailed both delivering their own publication profile but also mentoring, assisting and teaching on both undergraduate and post graduate courses in a range of languages.  The range of activity from teaching, to writing, publishing, researching and mentoring the ESRs was carried out in exemplary fashion.   
 
To complete the programme of events organised by our ESRs and ERs we have a great day of activity on Tuesday 3 May 2016 to be hosted at Strathclyde by our Theme 3 Team (Employee Wellbeing and Work Life Quality), entitled 'What's happening with Job Quality? Policy, Practice and Research Directions'.  The event will present the latest European trends in the quality of work (see below).

Staff News

The last three years have flown past and we now have to say a farewell to many of the ESRs/ERs as their contracts finish and they move on from their host institutions.  Although people are still working on their various theme outputs, some on their PhDs, while others are looking for or have started new employment.  We would like to say thank you to everyone for the hard work and commitment that you have shown over the last three years.  We wish you all good luck over the next few months and look forward to seeing everyone at the Final Colloquium in November 2016, Brussels.

Open Day Report, November 2015

A number of undergraduate students studying Journalism attended the recent Changing Employment Open Day as part of their coursework to write a news story about a pubic event.  One of the articles 'Strathclyde's research supports trade unions in changing work scene' written by Sara Bresciani, BA Hons Humanities and Social Sciences, is now available to read online.

Changing Employment Events

A theme 3 event entitled 'What's happening with Job Quality? Policy, Practice and Research Directions' is taking place on Tuesday 3 May 2016 at the University of Strathclyde.  The event will present the latest European trends in the quality of work, which includes employment security, skills, autonomy, and rewards. Job quality has risen in the public policy agenda, as well as being increasingly recognised as important for business performance and employee wellbeing.
