2022: Recapping NYPA's Re-Emergent Year

After several years of working remotely due to COVID, 2022 began NYPA's re-emergence as an organization that brings together members of our industry statewide. As a leader for over twenty years of advocating for jobs, education opportunities, and diversity within our industry, it was good to "get the band back together" in a number of ways our members have come to expect over the years. Highlights from 2022 include:
  • The year began with Governor Hochul proposing a three-year extension of the New York State Film Tax Credit Program. After years of advocacy by NYPA and our partners in the industry, providing stability to the program eliminated a competitive disadvantage. Along with the extension enacted by the legislature in the spring, New York added a diversity requirement and a meaningful commitment of funding sources for job development, all things NYPA applauds.
  • For over a decade, NYPA has awarded scholarships to students graduating high school looking to continue their education in pursuit of Below the Line careers. For the first time, NYPA awarded scholarships in the Rochester/Finger Lakes region and High Peaks region of the Adirondacks.
  • NYPA leadership and members were present at events supporting partners and members throughout the state, including:
    • Capital Region & Adirondacks Film Alliance Industry Day
    • Stockade Works 5th Anniversary Party
    • Central Park SummerStage & Rooftop Films screening of Mija
    • Rochester/Finger Lakes Film Commission 30th Anniversary Party
    • Hamptons International Film Festival
    • Woodstock Film Festival
    • Lake Placid Film Festival
  • NYPA held its inaugural Industry Day in New York City, bringing together film commissioners, business owners, producers, educators and students for a day of thought leadership, networking, and discussions. The day culminated in the NYPA Awards.
  • NYPA's mailings continued to grow engagement, with most mailings being read by over 40% of subscribers, leading to tens of thousands of impressions.
Looking to 2023

Looking ahead to 2023, the organization already has some exciting plans in store, including:
  • For the first time since 2020, NYPA leadership will be returning to Sundance to advocate filming throughout NY state. If you are attending Sundance, please let Matt know.
  • The Board has committed to growing the NYPA Scholarship funding 50%, with a goal of continuing to reach students in areas of the state who have not previously been recognized.
  • Increased NYPA events, including a return of the in person Annual Meeting in late spring.
  • Increased NYPA participation in panels and seminars throughout the state.
  • The Second Annual NYPA Industry Day & Awards on November 9, 2023.

ICYMI: Industry Day & Awards Wrap Up
Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the inaugural NYPA Industry Day & Awards! We had a great day at The Center. Our panels provided information, inspiration, and insights into the coming year. Our Selfless Heroes Awards gave us the opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous service of Eva Radke and ArtCube Nation during the early days of the pandemic. And finally, our NYPA Diversity Awards helped us recognize the tremendous work of Reel Works and Stockade Works in lifting up and providing a path into our industry for those from historically excluded populations.

Bringing our industry together in the same room has been a core value of NYPA since our founding, and this day marked an important return to in person events for the organization. For many, it was the first time seeing other since the pandemic started, and for others their first-time meeting in person. Keep an eye out for more events in the near future, and mark your calendars for November 9, 2023 for our next NYPA Industry Day & Awards!
