An Update from The Children's Center

The Children's Center follows the emergency closing mandates of Beaufort County schools. We, along with so many, are anxious for everyone to be safe from this virus. The Children's Center is currently closed and will remain closed until at least May 1st. We have taken this opportunity to deep clean our classrooms and public areas. We are prepared for the return of our children and families who we miss terribly.

During the next week, The Children's Center will be providing parents with regular communication that will include ideas for what to do to help your children cope with this confusing time and how to help them continue to develop along their individual developmental pathways. We will connect virtually with our children and let them know they are missed!

The Party is Rescheduled - Save the Date!

Never fear - the party is still happening, but the date has changed! The Children's Center is pleased to announce that our first annual Celebration Dinner has been rescheduled for April 24, 2021. The Committee sends along sincere appreciation to all those who committed to sponsorships and advertisements for this event and we thank them for understanding the value of early education for our children and for the economic vitality of our community.  We look forward to seeing everyone next April for the biggest and best event The Children's Center has ever hosted!

Our 2020 Sponsors included:

You can still TWEET!

Everyone on Hilton Head will miss this year's RBC Heritage Golf Tournament!  Many of our friends and donors support our Center through their participation in the Birdies for Charity program annually.  Last year The Children's Center received over $11,000 because of donations to this program.  We have been told by the Heritage Classic Foundation that all prepaid donations will be forwarded to the charity of choice, so thank you to everyone who has already sent your donation!!  While the golfers are not swinging and the Heritage Foundation is not matching The Children's Center is grateful for any donations you might still consider making in honor of the 2020 RBC Heritage in support of our children.

You can make a check payable to The Children's Center and designate it as "Birdies."  Your donations will not be matched, but they will be s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d to ensure every child at our Center receives affordable, high-quality early education that will help them achieve success upon entering kindergarten!

Thank you!

Too Much Screen Time = Not a Good Thing

There is significant research that shows too much screen time is detrimental to a young child's development. Too much time in front of a computer or watching TV can negatively impact the development of memory, attention and language skills.  Excessive screen time is linked to delayed progress on key developmental skills like problem-solving, communication and social interaction.  How much is too much?

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests no more than one hour of quality educational screen time daily. We know that the most important time for brain development is between the ages of birth to five, with rapidly developing new connections and learning from every cue it receives.  Too much screen time creates missed opportunities for learning and development. When a child is staring at a screen, they are missing the opportunity to walk, talk and interact with others, critical components of brain development.

During this time of COVID-19 quarantines and school closures, many parents are at a loss for ideas to keep their children active and engaged. With parents working from home, they struggle to balance their work time and care for their children. Here are some ideas for enjoying quality time with your children:
