Our mission is to celebrate and preserve Port Coquitlam's diverse heritage and culture through community engagement.

Port Coquitlam 106th Anniversary

March 7th was the City of Port Coquitlam's 106th Anniversary! Happy Birthday PoCo!

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate, especially Mayor Brad West, Councillors McCurrach and Darling, Freedom of the City recipient Mike Forrest, School Trustee Michael Thomas, and all City staff members!

Another special thank you to the Terry Fox Library for running the heritage photo green screen photo booth. It was a huge hit and lots of fun!

May Day Anniversary Mural

Things are changing in Port Coquitlam! Former Mayor Greg Moore will be opening a new brewery and BBQ restaurant this summer.

Unfortunately, the necessary renovations to the building will affect the beautiful May Day mural painted on the side of the building in commemoration of the 75th May Day Anniversary in 1998. If you want to see it before the renovations begin and bid it a fond farewell, take a stroll past the old Inno Bakery building at Marpole and Shaughnessy!

While we will dearly miss this beautiful mural, we are excited to be able to offer a toast to its memory with a Patina Brewing Co. beer this summer!

Tree Selfie Contest

Our Tree Selfie Contest is in full swing and we have our first couple of winners! Thank you to Green Chair Recycling and Laura Thomas for participating!

If you would like a chance at one of our remaining weekly prizes during the month of March post a picture or selfie with your favourite Port Coquitlam tree. Make sure to tag us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, and use the hashtag #MyPoCoTree!

Canada 150 - "Vulnerability to Village"
PoCo Heritage Exhibit in City Hall

Last year PoCo Heritage was invited by United Way Avenues of Change to join their "Vulnerability to Village" project on the Northside of Port Coquitlam, alongside Irvine Elementary School. This project and their associated #HiNeighbour campaign aimed to strengthen the sense of community in this neighbourhood, and resulted in the creation of Little Free Libraries all around Port Coquitlam.

PoCo Heritage went into the kindergarten classrooms of Irvine Elementary armed with copies of archive photos and watercolour paint and invited the children to add a little colour to Port Coquitlam's history! The resulting pieces of art are currently decorating the base poles of many of the Little Free Libraries around the city, and are now also on display in City Hall.

This display series, originally created last year to celebrate Canada 150, aims to connect the students of local schools to history and culture by providing a creative space for direct engagement between art and heritage. If you would like your class to be featured in upcoming City Hall exhibits please contact us at info@pocoheritage.org
