Support for Spencer & Stephen

Dear GRC members,
We received exciting news last week about the achievements of two young and talented GRC men. Stephen Harris and Spencer Kielar have been selected to compete for Canada at world championship events this summer.

Stephen Harris will row in the Men's Quad at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Tokyo, Japan, from August 7 to 11. The event will be held at the new Sea Forest Waterway, which will also host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Spencer Kielar will compete in the Lightweight Men's Single at the World Rowing U23 Championships in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida, USA, from July 24 to 28.

As many of you know, competing and succeeding at the highest international level takes exceptional commitment and countless hours in the boat, weight room, and on the erg. This makes it very difficult to work and train at the same time.  As a result, financial support plays a critical role in helping them reach their goals.  In their own words:

Spencer Kielar

"This summer started when I was invited to the U23/senior team integration camp in February. This camp was meant for potential U23 team rowers to get an idea of what it is like to train at the national training centre. After talking with Terry Paul, the men's coach and last year's U23 coach, I decided that it would be beneficial for me to train at the centre for the summer to improve my chances of making the team this year. I moved out to Victoria at the end of April to train until Speed Orders and team selection. My experience has definitely been a roller coaster: dealing with dramatically increased training volume and blisters, rowing 40 km a day, and duelling it out head to head against guys that push me to my best performance. It is a bit strange for me not racing for Guelph for the first time in my 6 years of rowing. But whenever I am given the opportunity, I race in my favourite unisuit - the super G! I have been given the honour of being able to compete for Canada at a world championship, one of my top rowing goals of the past 3 years. My goal for the U23 World Championships in Sarasota Florida is to finish in the top 10, with the hope of making the A final. As part of the team, Rowing Canada has created a crowd funding platform to help reduce the athlete costs for attending world championships. Here is the link to the fundraising page. Donations or helping share the link around would be very much appreciated."

"When I was 8 years old I went to watch some of the Guelph masters rowers compete at the World Master's rowing championships in St Catharines. I had been to many regattas before, but this one was really exciting and made me think I want to do this too. 9 years later I have been given the amazing opportunity to represent Canada at the Junior World Championships in Tokyo. This is the "test" event for the Olympics next year and we will be working with Rowing Canada to help provide data for them for the senior team when they are at the Olympics next summer. Our team will be living in Victoria and training on Quamichan Lake ( RCA's new training centre) until the end of July and then we head to Tokyo for a 1 week camp followed by the World Championships August 7th to 12th. This event has been my goal for the last 3 years and I am so honoured to be able to represent Canada and the Guelph Rowing Club on the world stage. I want to thank all the coaches and athletes I have rowed with at the Guelph Rowing Club over the last 4 years for helping me get to this stage. If you are able to support our program we would greatly appreciate it. The cost for each of us to participate in Tokyo is $6000. My crew of Adam, Liam, Eric and myself have set high goals and are aiming to make the A final and win a medal.  Thank you again for all the congratulations that people have sent. When our team has an Instagram account up, I will make sure it gets forwarded to the club so you can follow our journey on the road to Tokyo!" Thanks to everyone for all the support you've provided Stephen and Spencer!

Good luck boys. We'll be following you closely and cheering you on from here in Guelph!
