June Newsletter

The warm temperatures are finally here and we're seeing more boats on the water! A quick review of activities in the last month and coming up in July.

Try Rowing Success
A huge success! We had 20 participants and many volunteers. Many thanks to Isobelle Gray for her leadership and community spirit working with the organizers of the Two Rivers Festival for free marketing and their excellent photography support.

Vintage Single for Sale
A mid-weight wooden Schoenbrod single built in 1968 is for sale.  Schoenbrod originated in the sixties out of Maine. They were known for their high quality eights and there were only a limited number of singles built. This fine shell is still in good condition and has the original leather foot stops that are still functional, accommodating various foot sizes. Their wooden "soles" offer great push off advantage on the drive. It is currently stored in the boathouse on a high rack.  Please contact Walter Khem for further details

U23 & U21 Team
A big congratulations to Spencer Kielar who will compete for Canada in the Lightweight Men's Single at the U23 World Championships in Sarasota, Florida from July 24 - 28. See the full announcement from RCA here

CTV Kitchener - In Your Backyard
Keep an eye out for a CTV film crew who are planning to film a segment about GRC for their regular segment called "On Our Backyard".

CSSRA Results
Guelph high school crews were very successful at CSSRA, at the beginning of the month.  Ten crews from three high schools - Guelph CVI, Centennial CVI, and John F. Ross, competed against crews from across North America.
Entries were Ellie (GC) and Kristina (Ross) in women's junior singles, Meredith (GC) and Reagyn (Ross) in women's senior singles. Stephen (Ross) raced in the men's senior open single. Ellie and Ailsa (GC) and Abby and Katie (Ross) competed in the women's junior 2x while Paige and Allana (Cent) raced in the women's senior 2x. Johnny and Lucas (GC) lined up in the men's senior 2x and finally JodyLindseyPaige, and Allana(Cent) competed in the senior womens 4x.
Four of our crews made it to the semi finals - Kristina, Ellie, and Stephen in singles and Ellie and Ailsa in the junior women's double. The double finished 5th in their semi and the three singles moved on to finals where they all medalled! Ellie and Kristina won gold and bronze respectively in the junior women's 1x and Stephen won bronze in the Senior open men's 1x.
The high school coaches are very proud of their successes - first races, personal bests, and medals won - from all of our rowers. What they accomplished in such a brief season speaks volumes of their discipline and determination. The coaches would also like to extend their thanks to the dedicated and supportive parents who got up every morning to get their athletes to practice and competitions. We recognize the important role they play in this program. We wish the best of luck to athletes that are moving on from high school rowing and we look forward to seeing those not graduating through the summer or back for winter training in January.

The GRC Board would like to sincerely thank David, Isobelle, and Alex for their hours of dedication to these young athletes over the last several months. It's a huge commitment and it's greatly appreciated by the athletes, parents, and all members of the GRC Board.
