Sixth-grader Torrey Polk was chosen to play for the South Regional Rush Select Soccer Team. The team competed in a tournament in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and placed first in their division (12-13 year-olds). Rush Soccer is the largest soccer club in the world, and it is a privilege for a player to be recognized as one of the top players in the country in their age group.

ALUMNI NEWS

Sumner Abraham (FPDS Class of 2002) completed his internal medicine residency and is serving as University of Virginia’s chief resident in the Department of Medicine for the 2019-2020 academic year. He was awarded the Mulholland Society Teaching Award and Anne L. Brodie Resident Clinician Award. The Mulholland Award is given by the UVA School of Medicine to a resident or fellow at the university to recognize his or her excellence and dedication in teaching and educating medical students. The Brodie Award recognizes a resident physician at UVA who demonstrates clinical excellence in primary care and serves as a role model for peers. After completing his chief residency, Abraham plans to move to Oxford, Miss., and has signed with Internal Medicine Associates of Oxford. He was a member of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College at the University of Mississippi and will be teaching one class in the college in the fall semester of 2020.

Pictured with Sumner are his wife, Sarah, and sons Harrison and Jack.

Save the date for Wednesday night, January 8, as First Presbyterian Church Jackson and First Presbyterian Day School will host a Parenting Workshop. We encourage signing up before the craziness of the holiday season. The night will include a large group session with Sandy Willson (former Senior Minister at 2nd Pres. Memphis and now interim pastor at Covenant Pres. Birmingham), and seven breakout sessions from Sandy (Parenting for the Long Haul); Brian Sorgenfrei (Raising Boys); Susan Tyner (Daughter Drama?); Brian Smith (Life on the Hamster Wheel); Shirley Windham (Making Family Memories: Our Quest for Nostalgia and Nurture); Dr. David Elkin (The Good, the Bad, and the Way Forward: an Interactive Breakout on Social Media); and Barb Martin (Picking up the Pieces: Fresh Start in a Fallen World). Whether you long to be a parent, are parenting a three-month-old baby, guiding teenagers through high school, learning how to parent adult children, entering an easy phase of family life or a difficult one, we hope that this evening will prove an encouraging time for learning and growing together in one of our most important roles.

Register online at https://fpcj.ms/parenting. Open to the community, so please invite friends - you don’t have to be a member of the church or attend the school to come. Childcare is available by request at registration. Email discipleship@fpcjackson.org with any questions.
