STUDENT NEWS

Our 2020-2021 school year is off to a great start. The Lord has blessed us with a safe and healthy first nine weeks. Our students have been busy learning as we strive to “pursue excellence in academics.” Below are just a few examples of projects and activities. In our next issue, we will highlight chapel and our special subjects.
K3 and K4 Preschool

FPDS is operating under our Green Mode of Operations (in-person with limited modifications), which includes restricted field trips. Our preschoolers did not let that stop their Fall fun - students enjoyed a pumpkin patch on the grassy knoll and a tractor ride around the parking lot.

K5 Kindergarten

Kindergartners meet a new SuperKids Reading Program character weekly, featured in individual booklets with one letter and sound each week. Students learn to write the upper and lowercase letter and are beginning to blend sounds.

First Grade

The grade used apples in math, science, art, snack time, and writing. The unit ended with a fun Johnny Appleseed Day.

Second Grade

Second graders wrote, illustrated, and published autobiographies.

Third Grade

Each year our third grade studies sequencing by making s’mores that cook outside in the sun. Students wrote a description of the process from start to finish using words like first, next, and then.

Fourth Grade

Students in fourth grade loved reading and studying the book “Because of Winn-Dixie.

Fifth Grade: Science

“Burrow’s Bridge Project” was a fun hands-on activity for fifth graders. Teams assigned jobs, “purchased” materials, and created and tested bridges strong enough to hold marbles.

Sixth Grade: Science

Sixth grade students created rubber band race cars, made by hand to study measurement and speed. Students pulled the rubber bands to propel the cars.

For more than 50 years, First Presbyterian Day School has been a steadfast leader in Christian education. As the world around us has faced an ever-changing social and political landscape, FPDS’s dedication to providing our students with an academically robust, Biblically-based education has been unwavering. Now, in the midst of a global pandemic, our commitment to our students’ academic, emotional, spiritual, and physical wellbeing resonates louder than ever.

With that being said, prioritizing the health and safety of our families takes precedence. So, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of our beloved annual Holiday Potpourri fundraiser. As this is our school’s only fundraiser, cancelling it was a difficult decision that we did not take lightly. This fundraiser generates more than $200,000 annually, and its revenue has supported such important projects as the development of the preschool program, the building of a state-of-the-art science lab, the library expansion and, most recently, our campus expansion, which will include a new gymnatorium.

However, despite Holiday Potpourri’s cancellation, we optimistically look toward the future and place our trust in the Lord. If you would like to make a tax deductible contribution to FPDS in lieu of the 2020 event, please return a check made payable to “Crusader Club” with the memo line marked “Holiday Potpourri 2020” to the school office.

We thank you for your prayers and support and, most importantly, for investing in future generations.
