Concert #6 – Sunday, March 28 – 2 pm

Join us this Sunday, March 28  at 2 pm for an amazing concert featuring the funky and unique sound of Moneka Arabic Jazz.  Rooted in jazz and blues, the group’s repertoire weaves African identity and influences into its music.

Moneka Arabic Jazz draws from leader Ahmed Moneka’s Afro-Iraqi heritage and influences, flavoured by Toronto’s multicultural mix, to create a distinct, funky and unique sound.   Ahmed’s work has led to collaborations with the Canadian Opera Company, Aga Khan Museum, Tafelmusik, Koerner Hall, Modern Times Stage, and Jaberi Dance Theatre.   He has been an artist-in-residence with Driftwood Theatre Group, was a Stingray Rising Stars winner at the 2019 TD Toronto Jazz festival, and founded Moneka Arabic Jazz in part to reflect the stories and songs of his background. Each of the six talented musicians contributes to a sound that embodies the great diversity of Toronto in 2020.

Thank you for tuning in and supporting live music!

In this extraordinary year, it is more important than ever that we all keep connected. The entire TDMJF Committee deeply appreciates your ongoing interest in live jazz in Markham. Our goal is to build a bridge to a better 2021.

We’re very grateful to the following generous organizations: our title sponsor, TD Bank; series presenting sponsor Kylemore Communities; concert presenter Pfaff BMW Markham / MINI; with sound support from Long & McQuade; cooperation with the City  of Markham; and our steadfast government partners, as well as the community groups and companies who have stood by us for many years. Thank you!

The TD Markham Jazz Festival is a not-for-profit organization with a mandate to enrich cultural life in the region by bringing emerging and established jazz artists to Markham for all to enjoy. Established in 1998, the festival draws more than 25,000 residents and visitors to the streets of Unionville during the third weekend in August. Local and international artists deliver over 30 open-air performances during the weekend as well as in selected “hot spots” and at a ticketed opening-night concert. During the year, the festival hosts “Hot Spot Concerts” at selected venues in Markham. TD Canada Trust became its title sponsor in 2014.
