TD Markham Jazz Festival Announces Brand New
Concert Series: September 2020 to March 2021

Yes – Jazz lives in Markham!

While we dearly missed seeing our fans in person this summer, we can’t live without live music, and we know you can’t either!

So, in place of holding our 23rd annual outdoor festival in historic Unionville this year, the TD Markham Jazz Festival is thrilled to bring together jazz lovers, musicians and the community through a series of monthly concerts from September 2020 through March 2021.

Canadian jazz stars will perform in select venues around Markham and will be live-streamed on Facebook Live and recorded for viewing later on TDMJF’s YouTube channel. If and when health protocols safely allow it, we will offer a limited number of tickets to our fans.

Fabulous way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Each concert will take place on the last Sunday of the month, starting at 2 pm. Set your calendars now for these first three dates, and plan to tune in at facebook.com/markhamjazzfmaestival prior to each concert.
  • Concert #1 – Sunday, September 27
  • Concert #2 – Sunday, October 25
  • Concert #3 – Sunday, November 29

** Stay tuned for update on concerts 4, 5 and 6 as we go!  They will be the last Sunday of the month in January, February and March.

In Toronto from 2001, Alexis flourished as a writer and member of Kollage, earning nominations for “Best Jazz Trumpeter” by the Canadian National Jazz Awards in 2006, 2007 and 2008. He has performed with Nikky Yanofsky, David Foster, Michael Bublé, Paquito d’Rivera, Hilario Duran, Robi Botos, Andrea Boccelli, and Horacio “el negro” Hernandez, among many, as well as opening for Herbie Hancock, touring globally and releasing six solo albums, including the Juno-nominated “Sandstorm” in 2018. www.alexisbaro.com

Concert #2 – Sunday, October 25 – 2 pm

Spy Jazz with June Garber + Irene Torres, hosted by Jaymz Bee and featuring an exceptional band – Eric St. Laurent (guitars) George Koller (basses), Great Bob Scott (drums and percussion), Attila Fias (keyboards) and Alison Young (saxes).

June Garber has toured and performed as a singer in major centres in Canada and the United States as well as Cuba, the Caribbean, Mexico, South Africa and Australia.  She has performed at jazz festivals throughout North America, including the TD Markham Jazz festival, and with big bands in Toronto and Sarasota, Florida.

Irene Torres, originally from Lima, Peru, has studied under some of the most noteworthy vocal instructors in North America. Irene loves to perform and knows that music is worth every minute devoted to it.

JAZZ.FM91 radio personality Jaymz Bee hosts this delightful foray into James Bond theme songs and other favourites from the spy jazz catalogue. The concert will also include original material never heard before!

Concert #3 – Sunday, November 29 – 2 pm

Donovan Locke brings his rich voice and great spirit to an afternoon of memorable standards and more.

Donovan Locke is a multi-talented vocalist based in Toronto. He started signing in church at a very early age, and in his teens joined the Toronto All-Stars Big Band, with whom he’s performed across Ontario and in the U.S.A. Donovan earned his Bachelor’s of Arts from Wilfrid Laurier University and his Bachelor of Education from Nipissing University. He has been a part of many Canadian productions, from David Ferry’s “The Postman” to Ann-Marie Donovan’s “Sounding Rituals,” and had the honour of singing with Cleo Laine, John Dankworth and Jackie Richardson, among many.
