This amazing concert was performed for our 24th Annual TD Markham Jazz Festival “Virtual Jam 21” in August, 2021. The Elmer Ferrer Group features some of the most talented jazz artists from both Canada and Cuba. The band’s diverse backgrounds and influences of Cuban, Latin, Jazz, Blues and World music make them the perfect choice for International Jazz Day!
Born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba and now based in Toronto, Elmer Ferrer is a multi-award-winning guitarist, composer and producer. Elmer is widely known for his exceptional guitar skills and musicianship, as one of the strongest voices in modern guitar. He is also recognized as one of the most talented and prolific musicians to ever come out of Cuba. Early in his career, Elmer won the Cubadisco Best New Album Award and was nominated as Cuba’s Best Jazz Album for “Metropoli.” Since then, Elmer has recorded on over 150 albums including two Latin Grammy nominations.

International Jazz Day
For 11 years running, both the United Nations and UNESCO have designated April 30 as International Jazz Day with the objective of highlighting jazz and its diplomatic role in uniting people from around the world. Each year, some 100 countries participate in local events celebrating this art form for its promotion of peace, diversity, respect for human rights and freedom of expression.

Local and international artists deliver over 30 open-air performances during the weekend as well as in selected “hot spots” and at a ticketed opening-night concert. During the year, the festival hosts “Hot Spot Concerts” at selected venues in Markham. TD Canada Trust became its title sponsor in 2014.
