TD Markham Jazz Festival:  Countdown to superb live jazz in Unionville!

Follow these tips for a great TDMJF experience!

Just four days remains before this year’s amazing TD Markham Jazz Festival kicks off, August 18 through 21 in Unionville. We wanted to share a few updates and tips to help make your music experience easy and rewarding and to help you enjoy more than 30 concerts featuring all kinds of jazz, blues, soul, and more.

Opening Night Concert and Reception: There are a very few tickets left for our Opening Night Concert with the exceptional Molly Johnson in the Varley Art Gallery lobby, August 18. Don’t miss this event! Go to www.markhamjazzfestival.com or call 905-471-5299.

Be aware of Main St. closures – Thousands of people converge on Unionville and enjoy strolling along historic Main St. during Festival weekend. To keep things safe, the street will be closed to vehicles Friday night (6 to 11 p.m.) and most of Saturday (noon to 11 p.m.) from Carlton Rd. to the Concession Rd. bypass. All roads reopen Sunday.

Avoid traffic and parking delays – The Festival provides convenient shuttle buses to Main Street Unionville and back all weekend from Markville Mall (northeast corner of the mall parking lot near McCowan and Bullock Dr.). Even if you live in the area, consider driving to this site and taking the bus instead of trying to park around Unionville.
Find maps and directions – plus the complete performance schedule – at www.markhamjazzfestival.com.
Pack up all your cares and woes – and bring a chair! – First rule of attending festivals: Be comfortable! Second rule: Be prepared for changes in weather. Clouds can give way to sunshine; temperatures can go up – and then down again.
  • Wear comfy shoes! No one is looking at your feet.
  • Carry your things in a light backpack.
  • Wear a hat and use sunblock.
  • Bring a jacket or hoodie.
  • Hydrate!
Seating at our three main stages can fill up quickly. Experts often carry a lightweight, folding chair from venue to venue.

Follow the Golden Rule! – The Festival is a shared public experience, so be considerate of your fellow audience members.
  • Silence phones during performances.
  • Be sure your umbrella isn’t blocking someone’s view.
  • Avoid overwhelming those nearby with cigarette or cigar smoke.
Reserve now at our “Hot Spots”– Complementing more than 30 free acts on our three outdoor stages and along Main Street Unionville are “Hot Spot” performances before and during the Festival. These have become very popular. Be sure to call ahead.
The full schedule is listed in our printed programme and online at www.markhamjazzfestival.com, along with addresses and phone numbers.
Tell us what you think! – Social media and instant access to online info are creating great collective conversations. Like us on Facebook (@markhamjazzfestival.com). Share your photos and recommendations on Twitter (@markhamjazzfest #markhamjazz). Or, simply turn to the fan next to you and chat. When it comes to jazz, there’s always something to talk about!

See you in Markham!

The TD Markham Jazz Festival is a not-for-profit organization with a mandate to enrich cultural life in the region by bringing emerging and established jazz artists to Markham for all to enjoy. Established in 1998, the festival draws more than 25,000 residents and visitors to the streets of Unionville during the third weekend in August. Local and international artists deliver over 30 open-air performances during the weekend as well as in selected “hot spots” and at a ticketed opening-night concert. During the year, the festival hosts “Hot Spot Concerts” at selected venues in Markham. TD Canada Trust became its title sponsor in 2014.
