John’s Beekeeping Diary for October 2019

Colony Build-Up
Our hives are now in the middle of the crucial build-up period of spring to prepare for their summer harvest. As their breeding increases to double the number of bees in a hive, I have been busy checking on their health and feed supply. This is the first time I have given them an organic treatment to control the varroa mite.

I have sold a few colonies to people who are replacing their ‘lost’ hives. Losses have been because of wasps, lack of strength of colony, lack of food and varroa mite damage. All this has highlighted the need for close assessment to recognise a problem before it’s too late.

There are always some hives that are just bursting with bees earlier than the rest. Their queen is doing a great job, but it can cause a problem for them when they run out of room in the hive. That is when they can swarm.

Top Bar Hive
We are trying something different for one of our customers – to install bees into a top bar hive. The bees build their own hanging comb with only one wooden top bar support. Every few days we are taking photos of their amazing progress. We can keep watch with minimal disturbance from the bees, so no protective gear has been necessary.

Swarms? Don't panic

Let us know if a swarm lands in your garden. We can come and collect it. There is no fee, in fact we’ll give you a pot of honey.
