John’s Beekeeping Diary for October –

Drones - Emerging for Duty

These new drones will be ready for mating with a virgin queen about 12 days after their hatching.

Up-to-the-minute aeronautics, with military or industrial drones flying around our skies are just a copy of what occurs in nature at this time of the year. Beehive drones are searching the skies for virgin queens.

This is a very critical time for the continuance of a colony as an old queen gives way to the emergence of a new queen that needs to go on a mating flight.
Mating occurs in flight, anywhere between 10 and 40 metres high. A drone finds a queen by tracking her pheromone vapour trail and then just spying her with its large eyes.

Apart from leading a swarm out of a hive this is the only other time a queen takes flight. Her mating with several drones sets her up for a lifetime (between 2-4 years) of laying 1000’s of eggs.

There needs to be plenty of drones in a colony. Our son Michael, has placed especially made frames of drone comb in his hives to guarantee there are enough drones around for mating. These frames have been made with larger than normal cells which the queen chooses for the rearing of the drones.

Successful queen rearing and mating determine the ultimate survival and top performance of a hive. This is why we have a strong focus on this topic this month as we replace old queens and build up new colonies for a new season.

Janice’s Recipe: Oat and Honey Bites

This is another of those fun recipes where you can mix and match with any of your favourite seeds, nuts or dried fruits. Honey amounts can be varied according to your own preference and  the type of dried fruit used.

  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 2 tablesp.chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries or soft dates roughly chopped
  • 2/3 cup crunchy peanut butter
  • 1 tsp.vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2-3 tablesp orange juice
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup 72% dark chocolate roughly chopped
  • Into a large mixing bowl, place all ingredients except chocolate pieces.
  •  Blend  ingredients together until well combined.
  • Cover bowl and refrigerate mixture overnight.
  • The next day: Moisten hands in cold water and work in the finely chopped chocolate pieces.
  • Shape mixture into small balls. Again, moistening  hands in cold water makes this task easier.
  •  Store covered, in the refrigerator or freezer
  • Enjoy
