Dear <<First Name>>,

We have had very positive feedback after deciding to open our shop each week on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Again we want to thank you all for the way you have supported our business when our shop was open just 3 days at the end of each month.

It's been fun sourcing new items and we are excited with a range of locally hand-crafted skin care products including shampoo and conditioner bars.

We have a supply of carry bags now available for a small cost for you to take away your purchases – a much nicer alternative to the usual plastic.

John’s Beekeeping Diary for August – Blossom is on the way

Signs of spring are here and blossom is just what the bees need. Actually, which has the greater need? Your trees needing bees for pollination and fruit set, or the bees needing pollen as a protein source for rearing their brood?

Let’s come to a truce about this matter: they need each other. It is amazing how, in nature, bees and flowers demonstrate this reciprocal balance so that the needs of both are met at the same time.

While I was at a farm apiary this week, gorse nearby was in full flower. Even gorse has a redeeming feature for the bees although farmers do their best to eradicate it.

Our hives are now in the breeding mode. They are building up their populations so that by early December they have a huge workforce ready to harvest nectar when flowers from the field are most abundant.

Our August work has been monitoring the hives and feeding sugar syrup and supplements if their food reserves are low It's a bit like a farmer feeding out hay and silage until the grass grows better.

It is very satisfying looking after our bees at this time of the year when everything is going forward.

Janice's Diary

It's been a busy month for me, especially working on our Beeswax Wrap supply. The demand is increasing as people become more aware of this amazing alternative to using Gladwrap.

Schools and adult groups alike are keenly taking hold of the concept and running with it. Many bags of grated beeswax are being purchased as folk are keen to make their own wraps. Others are enjoying choosing a variety of ready-made wraps which make wonderful gifts for family and friends.

I'm appreciating the help of Hanna, a lovely Japanese friend who will also be working in the shop with us a few hours each week.

When considering what recipe to share with you this month I was inspired after purchasing a big bag of juicy grapefruit from Hospice for 50c. I decided to grill some with honey drizzled over them for our breakfast treat, and they were delicious.

Grilled Honey Grapefruit
  • 2 grapefruit
  • 4 tsp. Honey
Method
  • Cut each grapefruit into halves
  • Loosen pulp from peel with a sharp knife
  • Drizzle 1 teasp. honey on each grapefruit half.
  • Place grapefruit under a griller for 5 minutes
  • Simple and delicious start for the day
