TOP Quarterly Newsletter | Summer 2015

2015 is far from over, and we've already initiated some great offsetting work in Monterey and beyond. Please scroll down to see all of our work bringing carbon-free energy to Monterey's youth and our new friends east of the Rockies!

A Carbon Free Education (and Future) with Rancho Cielo

On May 26th, The Offset Project and Rancho Cielo Youth Campus made headlines celebrating the launch of a cutting edge new solar photovoltaic installation workforce training program at Rancho Cielo Construction Academy. The launch also marked the completion of the first of eight planned solar installations to cleanly power Rancho Cielo. In case you weren't able to make it to the launch, we've included links to news hits about the celebration below.

A portion of this project was funded through The Offset Project's Monterey Bay Carbon Fund and a generous contribution including a solar training system from
First Solar. Project installation instruction is provided with support from Applied Solar Energy, RC Cubed, and John Muir Charter School. We are proud for an amazing roster of speakers and honored guests that joined us on the 26th. Speakers included Representative Sam Farr and County Supervisor John Phillips, Rancho Cielo's co-founder.

The Offset Project is proud to be a part of this very special effort, and to support the mission of Rancho Cielo with this innovative, clean energy and climate protection approach to workforce development. Stay tuned to future newsletters for updates about the progress of Rancho Cielo's solar transformation, as well as the students' progression through the program and into the clean energy workforce!

Pursuit of Gold with the Shell Houston Open

The Offset Project's work on behalf of the Shell Houston Open is being considered for Gold Level environmental certification from the Council for Responsible Sport. If TOP's work receives Gold Level certification, this will make the Shell Houston Open only the third PGA tournament to achieve this high standard. Overall, this year's Open diverted 92.5% of waste from landfills, marking a 5-percent increase over the standing record rate from 2013.

The process to Gold Level certification is not easy, and we'd like to thank everyone at the Open for allowing us the opportunity to be a part of this huge achievement. Here are a few highlights of our combined efforts with SHO toward Gold:
  • Creating operations standards that helped achieve a 92.5% diversion rate
  • Identifying sustainable purchasing solutions and upcycling partners
  • Measuring carbon emissions and developing a local offset program
  • Ensuring corporate responsibility measures are in place
We look forward to seeing how far above 92.5% the Shell Houston Open can divert next year!

New + Planned Clean EV Projects in Monterey

The Offset Project is proud to announce the installation of two new EV charging stations on the lower level of the Calle Principal Parking Garage in downtown Monterey! This marks the second and third EV charging stations TOP has helped install for Monterey County.

All of this is thanks to each and every one of you who supported us throughout this latest MC Gives! season. The Offset Project asked local residents to offset their daily carbon emissions by donating $20 for every 2,000 pounds of carbon emissions they emitted as a household, and they did! Individual and family carbon emissions may be determined by visiting the Monterey Bay Carbon Fund's carbon calculator. The results of those donations can be seen below (or in person here!).

Our next EV charging station project will be installed at the Monterey County Fairgrounds, in partnership with the California Roots Music and Arts Festival. Keep reading our forthcoming newsletters for more details on this and other developing project.

The brand new EV charging stations in downtown Monterey, made possible thanks to our funds received through our successful MC Gives! campaign. Get ready to see more EV stations around the Peninsula!
