Country Engagement: Ghana and Nigeria Forums Scheduled for February 2014

Following the signing of the MoUs with Ghana and Nigeria, the A4AI team has developed provisional plans for the start of each in-country engagement. The plans outline how the team will work with key stakeholders in each country to develop and deliver the first National A4AI Stakeholder Forums. The forums will give stakeholders the opportunity to discuss issues concerning broadband affordability in their countries, learn about A4AI’s objectives, and start building the national coalitions that will work towards necessary policy and regulatory change.
  • The Ghana Forum is tentatively scheduled to take place during the week of February 11, 2014.
  • The Nigeria Ministry of Communication Technology is establishing a project team that will work with A4AI. We have tentatively scheduled the first forum for the week of February 17.
We welcome all A4AI members and local partners at these forums and will be sending more information about how members can participate.

Affordability Research: Lifting Barriers to Internet Development in Africa: Suggestions for Improving Connectivity examines the factors that are obstructing the further development of the Internet ecosystem in Africa and the implications of those obstructions. It goes on to explore the possible remedies that can assist in resolving them. It follows on from a previous study on the impact of Internet exchange points (IXPs) in Kenya and Nigeria, which found that IXPs can and do improve the quality of Internet services and save African operators millions of dollars per year in connectivity fees — but that a key factor in the success of IXPs is the availability of good domestic connectivity.
