Sparking Action and Learning in Africa's Largest City

On July 14, more than 50 A4AI-Nigeria Coalition members gathered at the Protea Hotel Ikeja in Lagos, Nigeria to kick off two days of action planning and knowledge sharing. The July 14 coalition meeting allowed the coalition's three working groups to craft work plans to tackle challenges around three key issues impeding affordable access to the Internet in the country: Open Access and Infrastructure Sharing, Consumer Awareness and Pricing Transparency, and Spectrum Policy.

Not only was the meeting the first that A4AI hosted in Lagos (A4AI's first multi-stakeholder forum in March took place in Abuja), but A4AI also hosted its inaugural thematic workshops -- aimed at building the knowledge and capacity of the stakeholders we work with through workshops focused on specific priority issues. The July 15 workshops  focused on Spectrum Efficiency in Nigeria and Consumer Awareness of the Internet. The rich feedback and ideas generated during these workshops will be integrated into the Nigeria coalition's work plans. We will be hosting similar workshops on different topics in all of our countries of engagement.

Check out what our coalition members Busayo, Olanike and Nabiye had to say about their experience at the meetings on the World Pulse blog! You can also see photos from our July 14-15 Lagos meetings and other A4AI events on our Flickr page

Research Update

This week, A4AI released its case study on Cameroon. The case study focuses on a country that remains one of the least connected in the world—only 6 percent of Cameroonians use the Internet, and those that do pay heavily for the privilege, shelling out over 60 percent of average monthly income in the country for an entry-level fixed-line broadband package.
