A4AI's Nnenna Nwakanma Delivers Keynote at NETmundial on Behalf of Civil Society

On April 23-24, Brazil hosted the first NETmundial conference in Sao Paulo, convening 1,480 stakeholders from 97 countries to collaboratively define consistent principles of Internet governance and design a roadmap for the future development of Internet governance.

Chosen to be the representative for civil society, Web Foundation and A4AI's Africa Regional Coordinator Nnenna Nwakanma spoke in support of an "Internet of opportunities, of social justice, of development and of respect to privacy and human rights." Nnenna spoke alongside Brazil President Dilma Rousseff, World Wide Web Foundation’s Sir Tim Berners-Lee, one of the "fathers of the Internet" Vint Cerf, and UN Under-Secretary-General Wu Hongbo.

Nnenna described NETmundial as an opportunity to bring the issue of access to the forefront of the discussion on Internet governance principles. Speaking on a lack of access in developing countries, she said that each unconnected person "deserves access: to information, to libraries, to knowledge, to affordable Internet." You can watch Nnenna's full speech on Youtube and read the transcript here.

You can access the Brazil case study next week on the Research & Policy section of our website, along with our recently published case studies on Ghana and Nigeria.
