A4AI Engages Policymakers, Operators at 2014 Mobile World Congress

At this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain from February 24-27, it was clear that the question of how to connect the next billions of people to the Internet and the mobile sector's role in achieving this goal was on everyone's minds. It was a theme reiterated throughout the conference by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in his keynote, government leaders, mobile operators, and innovators.

Mobile broadband affordability, creation of local content, technology literacy, and infrastructure were issues that came up time and time again in various panels and speeches that the A4AI team attended. It was clear that policy and regulatory reform in developing countries was a vital piece of countries' efforts to achieve the ambitious goals they have for broadband -- to pull millions out of poverty and drive economic growth.

A4AI participated in the following events:

  • GSMA mWomen Seminar:  Sonia Jorge, Executive Director of A4AI, and Ann Mei Chang, Chief Innovation Officer at Mercy Corps (an A4AI member), served as panelists. You can read a summary of lessons learned from the seminar here
  • Preview and review panel of Mark Zuckerberg's keynote on Mobile World Live: Dr. Bitange Ndemo, A4AI Honorary Chair, and Michael Kende, Chief Economist for Internet Society (an A4AI member), served as panelists. You can watch full videos of the panels here
  • GSMA Ministerial Programme panel Policy approaches for sustained mobile investment and innovation:
Dr. Bitange Ndemo served as a panelist.
  • Alcatel-Lucent Government Roundtable: Sonia Jorge moderated the discussion that included the Colombian Minister of ICT Diego Molano, Rwandan Minister of Youth and ICT Jean Philbert Nsengimana, U.S. Ambassador for Telecom Daniel A. Sepulveda, the head of Mexico's telecom regulator Adriana Lambardini, and Secretary General of the African Telecommunications Union Abdoulkarim Soumaila.
