How is design and technology changing our relationship with food?

These days it is rare to be in a restaurant without catching someone taking a snap of their beautifully presented plateful of food, or ‘foodstagramming’ as it has been coined based on the photo sharing app Instagram. Foodstagramming is, in my eyes, partly responsible for the ever growing clean eating obsession which has rocketed the sales of avocados, chia seeds and many other superfoods which beforehand would have sat quietly, unknown and untouched in Holland & Barrett.

On the flip side foodstagramming has nurtured the birth of what is apparently called a ‘freakshake’, a milkshake topped with a cronut (croissant and doughnut hybrid) and lathered in anything decadently sweet such as ice cream, brownies and/or fudgefreakshake. We are being fed a stream of conflicting messages about eating norms and habits, messages of both excess and extreme moderation.

Technology and the immediate access to a myriad of information and images have certainly changed the way we eat. It is clear that we have long since surpassed the days of a standard meat and two veg diet and instead are presented with a different fad detox or food type each week. I hear souping is the new juicing and quinoa has been replaced by amaranth.

These changes in food trends are highly visible and blatant but there are many other ways that design and technology is altering our relationship with food and the experience of eating. In our next edition of TheDesigner (issue 31) I will consider just a few different examples that have recently caught my attention, some food for thought.

If you are involved in food design or the food industry we would love to hear your opinion on how technology is affecting our relationship with food. Contact
