Elsa discussed the role of media in perpetuating gender stereotypes, social entrepreneurship, and colorism in India. She elaborated the use of Safecity for crowdsourced stories of gender based violence (GBV) to identify urban safe and unsafe spaces, and to work with local communities and institutions through that data to create safer public spaces for all, in India, Kenya, Cameroon, and Nepal.

Savita Tai's Class

Our Youth Outreach Officer from Pune, Mona More, conducted a workshop regarding Sexual Harassment for the students of Savita Tai's Classes on October 11, 2019, in the Premnagar community.

Mona met Savita Tai during one of her home visits to spread awareness about Sexual Harassment in the local communities. During one of these home visits, Savita Tai had mentioned that sexual harassment remains unaddressed in the community.

The session was attended by 10 students. The session commenced with a small introduction. Topics like safety and the importance of safety were discussed.

Some of the girls complained about sexual harassment in the community. It came as a shock when one of them expressed that girls are being held at fault for being harassed for not being understanding of the kind of a community they live in and what kind of clothes that should be worn.

Later, the children were informed about POSH and the Safecity App. They were encouraged to share their stories of sexual harassment in spite of the troubling observation that they held themselves back from speaking up about their experiences, because of the stigma and the stereotypes that put the blame of sexual harassment on the victims.

POCSO Awareness Run, Delhi

On October 17th, 2019, our Youth Outreach Officer, Jyoti Goyal represented Safecity at the “POCSO Awareness Run” at Cannaught Place, Delhi. The campaign advocated for “a society free from sexual violence”. Jyoti talked about Safecity's purpose for identifying hotspots which are unsafe and vulnerable to sexual violence. Participants were asked to share their stories of sexual harassment to help identify hotspots.

People shared that Bus route # 534 is unsafe and they have heard about many cases of harassment and theft on this route, as well as harassment in the metro was found to be common, with many places of Sangam Vihar are unsafe. A girl echoed the harassment in a bus. Participants appreciated the work of Safecity.

Day 3 of 16 Days of Activism

Our Youth Outreach Officer, Jyoti Goyal conducted a safety audit at four public spaces in Delhi on October 28th, 2019 in order to honour the 16 Days of Activism. The four places selected were Nehru Place Market, Astha Kunj Road, Hans Raj Sethi Marg, and Nehru Place Bus Stop on Lala Lajpat Rai Road.

After a thorough check-up, a report was written by our officers. The report has been uploaded on the Safecity App and available for you to see.

The team audited for various aspects of safety including:
