Voluntary Action Reigate and Banstead eNews

30 September 2021
Hello <<First Name>>

Welcome to VARB e-news: for voluntary, community, and faith organisations in Reigate & Banstead.  In this edition, we announce the date for our annual Funding Fair,  pass on some nudges from local funders and have a selection of green resources.

And finally, good luck to Ian Burks CEO of YMCA East Surrey who is running the London Marathon this weekend to raise funds for the YMCA Life Change Fund.  (On a more comfortable note - if you would like VARB to promote your pain free fundraising events please send us details/a link.)

Best wishes,
The VARB Team
Funding and Resources
Funding Fair 2021 - 10 November 10am -12.30pm
Registrations are now open for the Central & East Surrey Funding Fair.  Meet local and national funders and hear about their changing priorities.  Opportunities for individual questions and a funder panel. Details here.

RBBC Small Grants - raise your profile with councillors now

The Borough Council is keen to increase applications to their Small Grants fund (up to £2000).  To apply you must be nominated by a councillor(s) before 8 October.  A list of local councillors is available here.   An email to councillors, to raise awareness of your organisation and its funding need, is worth considering.

Community Foundation for Surrey - deadline reminder
Expressions of Interest must be submitted by 9 am on Monday 4 October to be considered in the next funding round.  One form for over 80 funds - average grant £6k-£7k.  Details here.

The Easyfundraising platform enables charities and community groups to raise funds through online shopping.  The amounts involved are generally small, but it is an unrestricted funding source (ie. you can spend it on anything) and pre-Christmas is a good time to join.   Webinar to find out more.
Volunteers and Covid
At our recent Volunteer Coordinator meeting, we took a straw poll on the measures that organisations are taking to keep volunteers safe in this "not-yet-quite-post-Covid" time.  There was a mixture of approaches: some are maintaining mask-wearing indoors and testing regularly, others are leaving it more to the discretion of volunteers.  The main consensus was that an individual risk assessment for each role is helpful in deciding appropriate measures.  NCVO guidance here.

Reigate & Banstead Volunteer Forum
VARB is hosting an online forum for local volunteers, on 30 November, to help them get the most from their volunteering experience.   Please highlight this support opportunity to your volunteers.  Details here.

Going green in the voluntary sector
As COP26 is around the corner, we thought it timely to highlight some resources to help the voluntary sector play our part in addressing climate change: Supporting the Armed Forces community
The Armed Forces Covenant is a pledge to support serving or ex-service personnel and ensure they are not disadvantaged due to their military service.  If any of your clients have a service history, you can help by raising awareness of the many specialist services available to them.  There is also an Armed Forces Covenant Fund to support projects with the armed forces community.  Details of local support here.

Can you help find a house for rent or sale?
Due to Covid, Renewed Hope are unable to run the WInter Night Shelter this year.  However they are urgently looking for a 3/4 bedroom house in Redhill or Reigate to buy or rent for use as a supported house for homeless people.  Details here.
