9th December 2016 - Merry Christmas

View this email in your browser
Welcome to the final Stockport Grammar School Email Newsletter of the Autumn Term. We hope that you enjoy reading it and find it a useful roundup of news and information.
I should like to wish every member of our school community a happy and peaceful Christmas together with all good fortune in the New Year.
Andrew Chicken
The competition to design the cover of the carol service programme was won by Lower Sixth pupil Emily Dixon.  The runner–up was Kitty Grant of the Fifth Year.  Emily’s design will be used for both the Carol Service programme and the school Christmas card, while Kitty will see her design used next year.

This year’s school Carol Service will be held in St. George’s Church on Wednesday 14th December, beginning at 7pm.  Whilst attendance for pupils not performing is voluntary, we sincerely hope that you will join us for congregational carols, readings and to listen to our choirs in a magical candlelit service.  It is not necessary to obtain tickets for the Carol Service and parking will be available in the school car parks.  The Carol Service is a popular festive tradition and we would particularly encourage all First Year pupils to experience the evening, as it is one of the highlights of the School’s Autumn Term calendar.
Parents are reminded that school closes to pupils on Friday 16th December at 3.50pm and re-opens on Wednesday 4th January 2017.
The SPA would like to thank all the parents, pupils and staff who helped at the fair last Saturday and everybody who came along and joined in the fun!
Visitors enjoyed a fantastic selection of stalls.  There were also external stalls selling a variety of gifts and treats.  Everyone enjoyed the festive food and drink with entertainment provided by the SGS Big Band and the Stockport Schools’ Brass Band.

SG3 Service
Jones Coaches have advised us that they are unable to operate the SG3 bus service from January 2017, as it is no longer viable for them to run it on a commercial basis due to the size of coaches they have available for this route.

A replacement service has been arranged with BNG Coaches, who will provide a 12 seater minibus following the same route and timings as the SG3 and with a similar pricing structure, with effect from 4th January 2017.

Parents of pupils who currently use the service were sent a letter last week informing them of the changes and the new contact details, but should anyone else be interested in using this service then BNG Coaches can be contacted via:

Cold, ‘flu and sickness viruses are more common in the winter months and, given the contagious nature of such illnesses, please can parents not send their child into school if he or she is displaying signs of these conditions.  Boys and girls who have developed a cold or a sickness / diarrhoea bug should remain off school for at least 48 hours in order that the virus is not spread to other pupils.
Fourth Year
Fourth Year pupils had an assembly on misuse of ICT and keeping themselves safe and have discussed these topics in form time.  A copy can be found here. They have also been reminded that they can use the Online Safety Centre for help and guidance.  Reports will be published on the Parent Portal on Friday 16th December.

Fifth Year
Fifth Year pupils had an assembly on Friday 2nd December led by a counsellor from Beacon Counselling Service.  Pupils have reviewed their progress following on from reports published on Monday 5th December and set themselves targets for next half term.  Further guidance on revision planning for the Trial exams was given out and discussed in form time.

Rugby
The 1st XV will play Lymm High School in the Cheshire Cup final to be held on 18th December at the AJ Bell Stadium, the home of Sale Sharks, as a curtain raiser to their game against Saracens in the European Rugby Champions Cup.

In addition the U14s have reached the Cheshire Cup final to be played on 15th December, after beating Wirral Grammar School 26-20.  There was also victory for the U15s in the Natwest U15 Plate; they are through to the North ‘A’ Final v Wirral Grammar School.

Congratulations to Sixth Form pupils Alex Brooks, Alex Jones and Tom Travis who were part of the Cheshire RFU U18s squad that faced Yorkshire and Lancashire recently, emerging victorious from both encounters.  Other rugby selections include Sale Sharks’ Cheshire East DPP, U14s: Bradley Boyd, Max Crompton, Henry Davies and Freddie Rimmer; U13s: Harry Brown, Ewan Curran and Harry Reeder.  Cheshire U15s: Seb Walker; Lancashire U15s: Oscar Elvin and Zac Sebouai.

Hockey
Pippa Brown, Sophie Douglas and Ellie Ward have recently been selected to attend the Manchester Performance Centre for England Hockey.

Would you or your company like to sponsor the Girls’ Hockey 1st XI as they seek to once again lift the National title when they take part in the National Schools Finals at the Lee Valley Stadium in London on the 1st and 2nd March 2017.  Opportunities are available to sponsor items of kit which the girls will wear at the competition and for the rest of the season.  If you would like to find out more please contact Miss Withington at withingtons@stockportgrammar.co.uk.

Football
Max Keigher has been selected for the England Independent Schools Football Association U16s squad.  Daniel Billington-Boateng and Sam Carr have been picked for the ISFA North West U13s team.

Netball
The U15s played in the second round of the ISNC plate competition earlier this week, beating Bradford Grammar School 61-30.  The team have also progressed through to the fourth round of the School Sports Magazine Cup, where they will face Bury Grammar School next week.

Your attention is drawn to the fact that pupils must not have their mobile phones or any other web-enabled device with them during any of their exams.  It is preferable that your child does not bring these things to school at all during the exam period but, if this is not possible, please make sure they bring a padlock so that they can make use of the personal effects lockers provided in school.

Fifth Year Trial Exams
The formal trial exam period will run from 4th to 13th January.  Information, including a timetable and rules, has been sent home by Mrs Smith, Head of Middle School.   Pupils have received their own copies via their Form Tutors.

Sixth Form Exams
The Lower Sixth will have their preliminary exams from 4th to 9th January.
The Upper Sixth will be in school as normal immediately after the Christmas holiday and will then have their trial exams from 9th to 13th January.  Information, including a timetable and rules, has been sent home from Mr Stone, Head of Sixth Form.   Pupils have received their own copies via their Form Tutors.
Albert Johnston Travel Award
The breadth and standard of the applications was excellent and two awards were presented.  First prize went to Adam Keyworth for his proposal A Journey to the Land of the Rising Sun; he will be travelling around interesting sites in Japan learning about the language and the culture.  Second prize goes to Natasha Brickstock for her project The Psychology Behind Art: New York; she will be looking at the impact of mental illness on artists and their art work.  Both pupils will receive a prize of £1000.
Science Live
The Fourth Year science trip takes place on Thursday 2nd February. The coach will leave school at 9.15am and return at approximately 4pm. This is an extremely exciting event with opportunities to see and hear five of Britain’s top scientists, who have all been specially selected for their ability to communicate science with students of this age and many are well known for their appearances on television.

If pupils are interested they should see one of their science teachers for a letter. Letters are also available on the parent portal.

The cost of the day is £30, pupils will need a packed lunch and to wear school uniform.
The final MARS of the Autumn Term took place this week and was a particularly calm and mellow concert suitable for a cold winter evening. Well done to Georgia Curwen, Tobin Rose, Sarah Callow, Sam Howard, Wolodymyr Krywonos, Olivia White and Lauryn Howard who delivered excellent performances for the appreciative audience.

By contrast the Christmas Concert last night proved to be a festive and exciting evening, before Chamber Choir brought the music to a seasonal climax with typically polished performances of Hark All Ye Saints and Il est Bel et Bon, finally wishing the audience A Merry Christmas.
Fifth Year pupil Annabel Tordoff and her Ballroom and Latin Dance Team have become National All Ladies Champions at the Supadance League Finals in Blackpool.  With more than 900 dancers taking part, Annabel and her partner were also finalists in their individual competitions.
