Parashat Vayigash  פרשת ויגש

Genesis 44:18 - 47:27 (triennial portion 46:28 - 47:27)

       Famine and Fortune
Pressured by years of poor harvests, Jacob's sons have traveled to Egypt, where grain was stockpiled during years of plenty. The brothers are burdened by contradictory conditions imposed by their aggrieved father Jacob, and by their presumed-dead brother Joseph, who has risen to power in Pharaoh's court. Walking a fine line, Judah offers his own servitude in exchange for food and mercy. The seemingly complex standoff resolves with surprising emotional simplicity. The siblings are overcome with love and forgiveness as Joseph discloses his true identity, and they find themselves in a tearful reunion.

Jacob, whose life has been shaped as both agent and victim of deception, receives the unexpected good news with disbelief. Even when he is brought to Joseph in Egypt and welcomed by Pharaoh, Jacob describes the years of his life as "few and miserable". Nonetheless, the Israelites settle in the fertile land of Goshen, where they prosper and multiply.
