What is obstetric fistulae?

Women who experience obstetric fistulae suffer constant incontinence, shame, social segregation and health problems. It is estimated that more than 2 million women live with untreated obstetric fistulae in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Obstetric fistulae are preventable; they can largely be avoided by:

  • Early diagnosis of failure to progress in labor and delivery
  • the diagnosis of obstructed labor
  • timely access to skilled essential and emergency obstetric care
Obstetric fistulae are repairable; they can be repaired by:
  • Access to a skilled, compassionate and competent surgeon
MaterCare International believes firmly that ALL mothers should have access to prenatal care, safe and clean facilities to deliver, and competent and well-trained medical staff to care for them.

“Death is death whether it occurs on the end of a bullet or giving birth...”
In 2001 the Canadian Medical Journal wrote about Dr. Walley and focused on fistula.
Today, this issue is still largely overlooked, even though each year between 50 000 to 100 000 women worldwide are affected by obstetric fistula, a hole in the birth canal. The development of obstetric fistula is directly linked to one of the major causes of maternal mortality: obstructed labour.

“...basically it's neglect.” -Dr. Robert Walley (2001)
