FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION, March 25, 2014

For the Western Church, the Annunciation is a feast honoring the Virgin Mary as the mother of Christ. The emphasis of the celebration is placed on her acceptance of this honor as the fulfillment of the prophecy written in Isaiah 7:14.

Through her word the Virgin conceived; she remained a virgin; as a virgin she gave birth to the Savior.

The most intimate relationship of God with any human being was with Mary, who carried in her whom the Son of God made man. Perhaps all mothers share in a small and mysterious way in that intimacy through their own birthing experiences.  The resounding "Yes!" to life mothers proclaim to their unborn children is a celebration and participation in God's love for us.

We believe obstetricians and midwives are the most privileged medical and nursing caregivers, as they serve the co-creators of human life. The acceptance of the invitation to Mary to become the Mother of God establishes our own duty as fellow human beings to say "Yes!" to serving mothers and their children.

Against all human expectation God chooses those who were considered powerless and weak to show forth his faithfulness to his promises: Hannah, the mother of Samuel; Deborah; Ruth; Judith and Esther; and many other women. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 489.129)

Happy Feast Day to all mothers and to our obstetrical and midwifery colleagues!

LETTER TO HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FROM MCI

We want to thank you for the enthusiasm, courage and support for mothers and the marginalized that you have brought to the papacy over the past year. As a group of Catholic obstetricians, midwives and health care professionals, your words of support, granted to us during a Papal Audience in September of 2013, gave us a new-found strength in the upholding of the dignity of all human life from conception to natural end. You said to us that, “Your being Catholic entails a greater responsibility: first of all to yourself, to be committed to being consistent with the Christian vocation; and then to contemporary culture, to contribute to recognizing the transcendent dimension in human life, the imprint of the creative work of God, from the very first moment of conception.”

MCI OFFICIAL STATEMENT:

In response to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s announcement that Canada will host a high-level Summit on maternal, newborn and child health from May 28-30, 2014, in Toronto, Ontario

"
Four years have passed since the 2010 Muskoka G8 summit that devoted $7.3 billion to maternal, newborn and child health, yet little has been done to fund positive programs that actively and significantly reduce the numbers of maternal and child deaths while maintaining the cultural values of the communities in which they operate."

Go green!

Email us at info@matercare.org to sign-up and receive paperless newsletters, reports, and greeting cards in the New Year. It's the environmentally friendly option, and changes to Canada Post services will make it increasingly difficult for you to get your mail by carrier. We're excited to offer paperless options for all of our MCI publications and correspondence.
