60TH SESSION OF THE COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN: UN SIDE EVENT ON "BEST PRACTICES FOR MATERNAL HEALTH CARE IN AFRICA"
On March 17th, MaterCare International founder Dr. Robert Walley was invited to participate in a side event organized by the Office of the Permanent Representative of the Holy See at the UN during the 60th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. The panel provided an important voice in the conversations in the West surrounding maternal health care.
"To solve the crisis of maternal healthcare in Africa, we first need to simply tell the truth regarding the suffering of mothers and what immediate needs can be provided to alleviate that. [...] Those who die obviously have no voice, only ours, to plead their case for adequate care, care of the sort mothers have access to in the rich world. Every mother, however, has a right to respect for her dignity, religious, moral, social and cultural values and the right to be free from unjust discrimination and coercion during pregnancy, childbirth and afterwards." -Dr. Robert Walley, Mothers Matter: Who on Earth Cares?
Panelist Obianuju Ekeocha stated, “Most of the African native languages do not even have a way to phrase abortion to mean anything good.” (Minute 1:11) The full recording of this session can be found on our website at MaterCare.org.
