Learn the Lingo & Meet Your Board

The recently chartered Central Iowa Alumnae Panhellenic Association (CIAPA) brings with it a whole new set of jargon and specific terms. Here’s a little “primer” so you’ll know the lingo:

CIAPA is organized as an ASSOCIATION. That means that each of the 26 NPC-recognized sororities/women’s fraternities is eligible for ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP. You just have to join and pay dues to become an active member. Active members have one vote per group.

There are two ways to join CIAPA – either as a GROUP MEMBER or as an INDIVIDUAL MEMBER. Group members are those groups that have an organized/active alumnae chapter in the area. Individual alumnae can join representing their NPC group if there is no organized alumnae chapter in the local area. Both group members and individual members can vote on the CIAPA Board. There can also be ASSOCIATE & AFFILIATE MEMBERS of CIAPA. These include women’s Greek groups that are not part of NPC but might be active on a campus as a local sorority. Associate members do not have a vote on the CIAPA Board.

Each active member identifies a DELEGATE and ALTERNATE DELEGATE to represent their group on the CIAPA BOARD. The CIAPA BOARD meets quarterly to plan and conduct the business of the association. Although both delegates and alternate delegates are encouraged to attend all board meetings, each active member has only one vote.

As needed, the EXECUTIVE BOARD can meet to conduct business between quarterly board meetings. The executive board includes the four CIAPA ELECTED OFFICERS: President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. The officers are elected by the full board. In CIAPA the president is not filled by a rotation-system [like NPC] but rather by election of the full board. Officers must be current delegates of their group.

Currently CIAPA has three STANDING COMMITTEES: Events (social), Community Outreach, and Fraternity Education & Communication. The CHAIR of a standing committee must be an active delegate but all alumnae are eligible and encouraged to get involved in committee work. Look for more information about our committees in our August CIAPA Newsletter.
