Things are moving quickly during this special session, and I want to keep you, my constituents, up to date.  I will be sending out my regular Monday newsletters during the special session but I will also alert you to public testimony opportunities or major schedule changes that occur during the week.

House Finance will be taking public testimony on SB 54, Crime and Sentencing, Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm and Monday from 5 pm to 9 pm.  The best way to testify is through your local Legislative Information Office.  See the full schedule and directions on how to testify here.

SB 54 makes adjustments to the criminal justice reform bill passed in 2016, SB 91.  You can read a UAA Justice Center summary of the reform recommendations that formed the basis of SB 91 or the excellent overview in Speaker Edgmon's newsletter.  The goal of SB 91 was to reduce recidivism, the rate at which prisoners re-offend after their release, by using evidence-based practices that have been successful in other states and to make the most effective use of our public safety dollars by investing proven programs.  To learn more about the changes being made by SB 54 you can read this FAQ prepared by the Department of Law

Rep. Paul Seaton
