FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT

Two weeks into the Sharks first season in 2nd Division and already we have learnt a number of things.  Firstly Melbourne has delivered once again – mid 20’s and sunburnt bodies Round 1 and freezing cold, torrential rain and strong winds making for tough conditions at Upper Ferntree Gully for Round 2.

What we have learnt after 2 rounds in the football season is:

Seniors

The Sharks are competitive in the competition after a 1 win & 1 loss start, following up a great Round 1 win with a 12 point loss to the strong UFTG at their ground in Round 2. Our game and other results have proven how close & competitive this competition will be, with the need to be on our game to perform each week. Our team was excellent in trying conditions in the first half and 4 goals up at ½ time. Unfortunately, this lead was wiped out quickly in the 3rd  even though we had the scoring end, but midway through the last quarter the game was still in the balance. UFTG finished stronger with better ball use and winning the clearances to beat the Sharks by 2 goals. One that got away was the sense amongst the players!!

Injuries to Michael Prosenak & Campbell Cromb were unfortunate but will create opportunities for others if they miss over the coming week(s).

Reserves

The Reserves have started strongly with great performances highlighting the depth in our club!! An even spread of contributors beat UFTG in the worst conditions of the day. With a 4-8-32 to 2-3-15 win it was a real grind and Michael Philp kicking 3 goals in the conditions was the difference.

Andrew Messina
We congratulate Andrew Messina for playing in his 100th game for the club on the weekend. A fantastic effort! Mess has been with the club since its inception and over the years been a captain, Best & Fairest Winner and dual Premiership player. Congratulations on your achievements and the milestone Mess!

Under 19’s

The Sharks are off to a great start with both Under 19’s recording their 2nd win each for the season.

The 1st team played UFTG who are traditionally in the top bracket and played strongly to defeat them 9-9-63 to 1-2-8 in a great team effort. This group continue to develop under Tony Weeks and have announced themselves in 2nd Divsion football with a strong start. Arrive early this Sat to see a great game at Domeney as they play Croydon who won 2nd Divsion Premiership last year and are sure to be a big challenge.

The 2nd team in a vagary of the fixture played East Burwood for the 2nd week in a row, this time increasing the winning margin to 125 points. Well done to our new senior Sharks on a great start to the season. This week our boys venture to Silvan in a test to play on their small / remote ground but we are sure they are up to the challenge and can come back to Domeney in the afternoon.

Netball

The season has commenced with our 3 teams looking for a strong year ahead. The Sharks teams had a mixed night in Round 1:
  • Divsion 1 team having a narrow loss
  • Divsion 2 team game canceled due to a fire nearby
  • Dvision 6 team having a big 42-10 win
Support the teams on a Friday night when you can with game details on the EFL site.
