The Circus Is In Town

This commentary, authored by founder and president Gwen McKinney, originally appeared in the Huffington Post.

In another time in our political history, it would be an interesting but irrelevant fact that the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus will fold this spring, ending 146 years of the greatest show on earth. In this surreal moment, the stage has shifted to the Donald Trump presidency. It promises to be more sensational than P.T. Barnum could ever imagine.

Long before the inauguration, the Trump presidency was previewed, shaped by reality TV, conflated by fake news and reinforced by a reign of Twitter. The noise has been riveting with...

McKinney Rolls Out A New Tool

A strategic communications plan absent a VISION is like a roadmap lacking a clear destination.  Popular convention widely deploys the SWOT analysis to drive the institutional landscape. As strategies and realities have changed in this multi-layered landscape of ideas and voices, the utility of the SWOT has evolved into the McKinney proprietary VISION® Analysis. This tool is a prerequisite of strategic planning and message development.  We propose it as the compass to give direction and clarity to the way forward for the National Collaborative on Health Equity.  Our work relies on the following probe:

McKinney’s uniquely crafted VISION Analysis will surface institutional assets in the quest for clarity and strategic engagement of internal and external audiences. The analysis will also provide the content for message refinement and stakeholder engagement, serving as a GPS for brand authenticity.

JustUS Voices Call for Stories

Few people think about women when they think about prisons, and even fewer think about mothers and grandmothers behind bars. Much of the public conversation about mass incarceration is centered on men.  But the ranks of incarcerated women are growing, even as they all too often remain unheard and unseen.

JustUS Voices is a multimedia storytelling initiative designed to bring these women’s stories to light by providing a compelling space where they can tell their stories in their own words. JustUs Voices will debut in California, home of the world’s largest women’s prison.

Susan Burton, founder of A New Way of Life (ANWOL) has partnered with McKinney & Associates to implement the initiative. Please share our Call for Stories with networks that include formerly incarcerated women in California or organizations and programs that serve them. Help them share their stories.
