Dear Friends:

It’s a pleasure to introduce you to News & Views. Through this new digital newsletter, I will keep you informed about recent news and activities at Guttman Community College, CUNY’s newest community college, and share my thoughts about the college and beyond.

At Guttman we are committed to doing “community college” differently to increase graduation rates for those who have been underserved by higher education--lower income, academically underprepared, first-generation college students. For example, our first-year students are required to attend on a full-time basis, they are organized into cohorts, the curriculum is more structured than other community colleges, and we use NYC as a classroom.

Data suggests that our innovative model is working. Our inaugural class had a 75% retention rate (Fall 2012 to Fall 2013), and we estimate that 20-25% of our students are now on track to graduate after two years.

Our recently chosen college motto, Building Community, Supporting Success, aptly describes our model. Our college, young as it is, has a remarkable story to tell and I look forward to sharing it with you in the ensuing months and years.
