Dear Friends:
As spring begins, we congratulate the 38 graduates from our inaugural class who completed their associate degrees at the end of the Fall 2014 semester. The College has now exceeded its three-year graduation goal of 35% for the inaugural class, with 118 students completing their degrees (41% graduation rate). Approximately 20 more students from the 2012 cohort are on track to graduate after the Spring 2015 semester.
At Guttman we encourage students to explore the community beyond campus. These explorations are now taking on an international flavor. Last December, 10 continuing students participated in the Guttman Global Ambassadors program by traveling to Berlin, Germany. This pilot international travel initiative was a cultural exchange with Gangway, a German social service government organization. In February the Global Ambassadors shared their experiences with the College during a lively special presentation. A group from Gangway will visit Guttman in April to pick up where they left off to share ideas, concepts, and outcomes in classes, workshops, and at an Open Mic event. We are also gratified that some of our 2014 graduates are engaging in exciting study and travel opportunities to further their education and give back to others.
Our students have recently been recognized for outstanding work and service as recipients of the Newman Civic Fellow for 2015, Human Services Incentive (HSI) Award, and the 2015 Phi Theta Kappa All-New York Academic Awards. Similarly, Mary Coleman, Interim Vice President for Administration and Finance, was among four local leaders honored by U.S. Congressman José E. Serrano and New York State Senator José M. Serrano in celebration of Black History Month for service strengthening the Bronx community. Mary previously worked at Bronx and Hostos Community Colleges.
We look forward to an eventful spring at the College, culminating with our second commencement on June 17.
