Dear Friends:

Guttman’s fourth Fall I session officially began with the Convocation ceremony at the beautiful Town Hall in midtown Manhattan. With this year’s larger incoming class of 450 students, we now have six Houses, each containing 75 first-year students. Each House has a different color; students in the photo above are wearing their House T-shirts as a sign of affiliation and community.  We also welcomed to the College 13 new full-time faculty members and a new Dean and an Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.

We enjoyed a productive summer at Guttman. In July five students traveled to Ecuador for 12 days to study conservation, culture, and conflict in Ecuadorian ecosystems as part of our first international credit bearing class. Students engaged in field observations and data collection in tropical rainforests, villages, and along the Pacific coastline. We believe international travel should be an integral component of the community college experience and look forward to offering more opportunities for students to study abroad in the future.

On August 14, we conferred 68 associate degrees to students from our inaugural 2012 cohort and those who entered in 2013.  Thus, after three years, 142 students from the College’s inaugural class (49%) have graduated. After just two years, 84 students from the 2013 cohort (30%) also received their associate degrees. These rates are considerably higher than the national graduation rates for large-city public two-year colleges and are an outstanding milestone for the College. We applaud our graduates’ hard work and wish them well as they pursue studies at senior colleges or begin successful careers.

Our busy summer concluded with the Summer Bridge Program. This required 10-day program ensures all incoming students are prepared for their coursework in the fall. We are inspired by their energy and eagerness to succeed.

We look forward to the remarkable stories from our incoming students as they begin a new chapter in their lives and from our continuing students who are embarking on their programs of study and exploring career options.

Sincerely,

Scott
