NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2015 | CEDA members and associates edition

September Newsletter

Dear <<First Name>>
Hello from Peta Godenzi, President
Email me: info@delorainehomestead.com.au or tel 0428 971 203.

Welcome to Spring and to our September newsletter. This really is a beautiful time of the year and a great chance to get outside and enjoy all the Warburton Valley has to offer.

Plastic Bag Free Warburton - Our August committee meeting was attended by Alvyn Williams, one of the organisers of the Plastic Bag Free Warburton initiative (PBFW). Alvyn did a short presentation to the committee and answered questions, and based on this information CEDA have agreed that this is an endeavour we will endorse.  We realise that this affects many retailers and look forward to working closely with our members and the PBFW group to ensure a smooth transition. More than 200 community members have recently attended a documentary film at the Arts Centre called BAG IT (see link to watch) and there is great community support behind this idea. Many retailers have already got behind the initiative and there will now be a series of info sessions and working groups to look at alternatives and work with other bodies, including the Shire of Yarra Ranges to make this happen. Going Plastic Bag Free might mean a few small changes in our daily way to do things, but will make a huge change to the health of our waterways and wildlife, things that are most precious to our region, our tourism and our economy. It also presents a potential marketing opportunity that makes a statement about the values of our region. If you haven't already checked out the information provided by this group take a moment to read their Facebook page here.

Don't forget to like and check in on our  Visit Warburton Facebook page. It's been great to see some of our members (good work Oscar's by the Yarra!) sharing posts from Visit Warburton's page, especially the snow updates. Now that we are moving into a new season, keep an eye out or our regular posts, which will now focus on activities and other interesting tourism information.
Help spread the word by linking to www.visitwarburton.com.au from your website and Facebook page.

GET NORDIC: at the Nordic Festival 17/18 October

Warburton will again turn into a Nordic hamlet for the weekend of October 17-18, 2015. Visit the Viking Camp, enjoy Nordic performances and films, sample some Nordic delicacies and buy unique handicrafts and other Nordic goods at the Market. This year our Opening Night Dinner will be an Urban Viking Feast taking place at the stunning Projekt 3488 on Saturday night, October 17.  This historic former Masonic Hall has a rustic feel and is perfect venue for a feast.
On arrival a welcome drink will be served on the deck overlooking the native gardens and picturesque mountain views. Food inspired by the Viking times will be served on large wooden platters to be shared by the guests seated along two massive 11 metre tables (and yes, there will be plates and knives and forks...). Praxis is playing Viking Era music and the courageous Viking Framherr Fathma will be overseeing the proceedings accompanied by one of her handsome and brave warriors. After dinner the tables will be cleared away and you will have your chance to be a 'Dancing Queen' for the rest of the night.
Come along to enjoy some merriment, delicious food, drink, Viking era music and good company.  This is not a fancy dress party but, by all means, do dress up if you want to express your inner Viking! There are only about 80 seats available so be sure to get your booking in quick!

CYCLING - Ol' Dirty

Sunday morning (30/8) saw more than 300 riders attend the Ol' Dirty cycling event (including two from Brisbane, and one from Adelaide who came specifically for the event). This ride saw cyclists tackle challenging hill climbs in the Warburton Valley and beyond.
The ride went off without a hitch and organisers have received dozens of comments about how beautiful the area is, and how this was the best ride that many had done either this year, or ever! The rides had their check-in at our new Info Node on the Rail Trail in Warburton (adjacent to Cog Bike Cafe) so it's great to see our facilities, which includes our natural assets being so appreciated.
Announcing GIRO DELLE DONNA!
And there is so much more to come with the 'Cycling Tips' organisers bringing their Gran Fondo - GIRO Delle DONNA event to Warburton Valley on November 22.  Already more than 700 pre registrations have been received  Check out the website here. This event will be 107 kms long, 2,750m of vertical climbing including the 20 km Reefton Spur almost right off the bat, 14 km of gravel on Acheron Way, and the true-mountain summit finish at the top of Donna Buang. This is a challenge for any cyclist, but can be enjoyed by all and should bring significant patronage to our area and local businesses. Watch video here
Thank Doug Greenall (Cog Bike Cafe) for the images.

Volunteers at the Waterwheel

The Waterwheel VIC is run entirely by volunteers and we truly appreciate the quality of service they give to people face to face EVERY DAY of the week between 10am and 4pm.  Visitors to the centre comment daily on how wonderful it is, in this digital age, to be able to speak to someone knowledgable directly, and it's a great way for visitors to truly experience the warm-hearted hospitality of the Warburton Valley.
We are always needing additional volunteers to join the team. If you think this might suit you please give us a call on 5966 9600 or drop in for a chat. We'd love to hear from you.
