April 2014 - An Intense Month

Thank you to all of you for registering for this newsletter, which I hope to send out regularly about once a month. I’ll be covering the astrology of the month ahead in each one. I’d like readers to appreciate that by understanding the planetary archetypes, and watching their manifestations in our lives and in the world, we see astrology as a language of interconnectedness, and of meaning. If there was no connection between planetary movements and our lives here on earth, everything would be random, but it isn’t. These movements with their unfolding meaning can be seen very clearly and precisely in our lives. Astrology proves that we live in an interconnected universe.

So I hope that over the coming months the understanding of these planetary cycles becomes clearer. Also, I hope it will help readers to feel part of these universal repeating cycles; it is only since Newton introduced his Laws of Motion about 300 years ago that the paradigm of this universe as merely mechanical and clockwork was born. Each birthchart is unique, and is triggered at predictable times by the movements of the outer planets. In citing certain birthtimes, I hope to help readers anticipate some of these important changes. Inevitably, I am just focusing on position of your Sun in these birthdates, but if you know your own birthchart well you will be able to make other connections. It’s important to say that where you have planets in your chart that are being triggered precisely by the transits mentioned below, you are likely to feel them in your own life very personally and directly. If you don’t have planets at these degrees, then you may see the manifestations of the transits in the world and with people you know, but they may not be felt by you directly.

This newsletter will be a particularly important one, not just because it is the first, but also because from March 29th we will experience the most intense month of the Uranus-Pluto aspect, spanning almost 4 years up to March 2015.

The symbolism of the Uranus-Pluto square is very powerful, and I have written and spoken about it a great deal over the last couple of years. In fact, it is the most powerful aspect we can experience in our lives and in the world, as it is so strongly associated with change. Both planets are associated with change, but a different kind of change: Pluto is deep, fundamental change, snake shedding a skin, things will never be the same again, the planet of death, rebirth and transformation; it is to do with breaking down and building up; and Uranus is speeded-up change (often a feeling of time running out), radical, disruptive change, the tearing down of the old and the bringing in of the new. As Uranus is known as the Awakener, its purpose is to break up old stale patterns, old ways of being and thinking that no longer serve us, and awaken us to a new level of perceiving.

In my book, ‘You Don’t Really Believe in Astrology, Do You?’, I devote two entire chapters to this aspect. Historically in the world, it is typically associated with people rising up against their governments and demanding more equality and freedom. Equality and freedom are important associations of Uranus, and it tends to be the young and disenfranchised particularly who demand these. There are many examples in the book, and some thoughts on how it will continue to unfold, which are now coming to pass since I wrote it last year. Although many countries, too long to list, have experienced such disruptions, Ukraine is the obvious example here. The birthchart of Ukraine (countries are born when they set up new institutions, eg. The Declaration of Independence in US in July 1776) is being triggered by the Uranus-Pluto square in the area of national security. The charts of Russia, US, UK, and many European countries are also being triggered precisely by the Uranus-Pluto square. Not only that, but the birthcharts of the leaders, for instance, of Russia, the US and Germany, are being precisely aspected by this configuration too. We might think that is amazing; but that’s how astrology works, there will always be people and circumstances that fulfill the symbolism, always.

The Uranus-Pluto square also has associations with big jumps in scientific and technological innovation, often those associated with communication. For instance, during the much more benign Uranus-Pluto conjunction in the 1960s, the Internet was born. However, at a different level this aspect is about a higher level of perception of our reality. Uranus, the Awakener, has associations with superconscious perception, the Mind of God, and allows some big breakthroughs in how we see our reality. I believe that part of this aspect this time around, will be people waking up to the understanding of how powerful our thinking is, that we live from the inside out, that life comes from us, not at us. That would be a very different perception for the majority of people. This is also connected to a shift in communication too, as people begin to understand that we are like radio transmitters, transmitting our thoughts and energy patterns all the time to others. I don’t know of any other astrologers who have made this connection to communication shifts for the Uranus-Pluto aspect, but after extensive historical research it is certainly one of the main themes. Remember that this Uranus-Pluto aspect continues until March 2015, so we have about a year during which we may see these developments.

Another manifestation of Uranus-Pluto aspects is extreme weather; as Neptune is currently in Pisces, and is therefore strong in its own water sign, in Chapter 10 of my book I mentioned that I thought we would see not only extreme weather but particularly flooding. That has certainly been the case through last winter, but also extremes of temperature as in the US, which experienced recording-breaking lows.

So now to the specifics: on March 30th, we have a New Moon in Aries, at 9 degrees 58 of Aries. The Sun and the New Moon sit together, and conjunct Uranus.  In Aries, it asks us to really focus on who we want to be. This is very much about your vision of individuality. This will be felt most by those born 28th March - 2nd April, 29th June – 3rd July, 30th September - 4th October, and 29th December – 2nd January of any year. Look for new beginnings around that time, the area of life will depend where this falls in your chart. When we have the Sun or Moon or a faster-moving planet aspecting a slower one, such as Uranus, it intensifies the message of the slower one. Uranus is already all about intensity and individuality. Remember that this combination reminds us that we are all part of the change in the world, and we can choose to use it positively for ourselves and others. On April 2nd the Sun is exactly conjunct Uranus, and on April 7th Mercury moves into Aries. This represents strong, eruptive and rebellious energy. On April 8th, the Sun opposes Mars. Most of the planets are occupying ‘cardinal’ signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, which are action-oriented.

Then from the middle of the month, astrologically this is the most powerful two weeks of the Uranus-Pluto aspect, which spans almost four years in its effects. Firstly, on April 15th at 7.42am, we have a total Lunar Eclipse in Libra, at 25 degrees 15. This is likely to be felt particularly by those born 13 – 17th April, 16 – 20th July, 16- 20th October, and 13 – 17th January. Eclipses are endings and beginnings, and are often very noticeable in our lives as the end of episodes but the opening of other opportunities, if they aspect our charts directly. Lunar eclipses occur when the Sun, Moon and Earth are in alignment, and therefore exert a stronger gravitational pull on the Earth. This Lunar Eclipse will last almost an hour, and will be clearly seen from North and South America, although sadly not from the UK. The Moon will be likely to turn dark red through this long Eclipse. Although it does not occur at the same degrees as the Uranus-Pluto square, it is again emphasizing cardinal signs of action. Mercury also joins Uranus in Aries at the time of the Eclipse, so it could be a time of brilliant insights and understandings, as well as sudden events. Eclipses may be felt up to two weeks either side of the exact date of the 15th.

Then from April 20-23rd, the Grand Cross of Uranus-Pluto-Jupiter-Mars locks into place, with each planet being exact to the degree (13 degrees of the cardinal signs). This will be felt most markedly by those born 1 – 5th January, 1 – 4th April, 3 – 7th July, and 4 – 8th October. This is a very rare astrological event. Astrologers never know exactly how this will manifest in the world, but could well be a period of fast moving change, more extreme weather, relationships of various kinds being stressed, and volatile stock markets. All of this is to encourage us to spiral upwards in our development, and think differently as we enter the new paradigm.

The Grand Cross is still there when on April 29th at 6.14am we have a Solar Eclipse in Taurus, at 8 degrees 51. People most likely to feel this are those born between 28 January – 2nd February, 28th April – 2nd May, 30th July – 4th August, and 31st October to 4th November. Solar Eclipses act like extra powerful New Moons, and this one in the Fixed Earth sign of Taurus may encourage us to think of our values, and of our connection to the Earth. We may evaluate our relationship to money, versus spiritual values, and how important the Earth and nature are in our lives. This is an important part of the birthing of the new paradigm. Venus, Neptune, and Chiron are all in the all-is-one spiritual sign of Pisces, encouraging us to realise that everything in the universe is connected. It may help us to live in a more holistic way, appreciating that the cosmos is one giant organism.

Throughout this whole period, Neptune remains in Pisces, as our spiritual anchor. Chiron is there too, helping us to find the ‘gift in the wound’, and move to a higher level of perception, a vital part of the birthing paradigm.

That’s April folks!
