In the news. Big things are happening for dyslexia. Our U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C. has formed a caucus, or group, to help bring awareness about our reading difference. Learn more about it here: dyslexia caucus.
How can you help? Contact your lawmakers and share your story. Do you have trouble in school? What would make it easier? Tell them.
Advocacy Tip: Tell Someone
“My best friend told me that he also struggles to read. I told him that he may have dyslexia, like I do, and that he should talk to his mom. I told him it’s nothing bad. It just means I have a hard time reading. It’s hard to tell someone that you have dyslexia, but I’m glad I did."  ~ David, age 8
The Hidden Staircase BookI really like the Hunger Games trilogy audiobooks in VOICEtext format. They kept me engaged and all my friends were reading the books so we could talk about them. In my opinion, these books started the whole dystopian society trend we are seeing now. I was impressed when I saw the movies because they were so similar to the books which doesn’t always happen. I would recommend this series for students in middle to high school.

Anthony, 18 years old, Senior

Not only is he a black belt in Kempo Karate, but he also loves working on vehicles. After high school, he plans to become certified in auto restoration while getting his business degree to open his own shop.  Anthony has been speaking about his dyslexia for over 8 years. His best advice is to self-advocate, try your best and hang in there. It is so worth it!

Dear Dexter, what do you do when your friends tease you about your dyslexia? Dexter says: I’m a funny alien, so sometimes I try to use humor to deflect the situation. I may tell a joke about my dyslexia to keep things light so my friends know it’s not a huge deal. If that doesn’t work, I try to explain what it is and that it’s a part of me. My friends just didn’t understand dyslexia, so once I explained it to them it was easy for them to understand my feelings. Your alien friend, Dexter the Dyslexian Have a question for Dexter? Email it to YES@LearningAlly.org. Dexter also sends texts! Sign up to get tips.
