Vodafone, a British company, evaluated 7 European cities in 5 different countries and selected Malaga to open their new European R&D Center of Excellence. The centre will create 600 new jobs and will focus on the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence and 5G solutions.

Everis, an NTT DATA japanese company, announced they are opening an office with plans to hire 500 people in 2 years.

Dedalus, the Italian company and EU leader in the development, implementation & maintenance of ICT healthcare solutions, has joined the Malaga Valley innovative ecosystem through the acquisition of DXC Technology. They inherit a talented group of R&D professionals working at the Malaga Tech Park and plan to expand their presence in our city as they lead digital transformation in the healthcare sector across the world.

EasyJet, British company, opens a new base in our city with 14 new routes,100 new jobs, & a personalized "Malaga" plane.

The Vodafone Giants e-sports club recently opened their new pioneering and innovative esports center in Malaga. As a reference in Spain and in southern Europe, this facility is a space for professional video game competitions and a meeting point for players and fans of the club. The Vodafone Giants are nationally recognized and a fixture on the European circuit with important accomplishments in world-renowned references such as League of Legends, Counter Strike, FIFA, Clash Royale, Call of Duty or Rainbow Six, among others.

Planmeca, the Finish manufacturer of high-tech dental equipment, such as 3D and 2D digital imaging devices, opens an office in Malaga.

Novasol, the largest northern European holiday rental company headquartered in Denmark, recently opened an office in the heart of Malaga with plans to expand their European services.

Transcom, the swedish global specialist in customer experience with offices in 23 countries, opens its sixth Spanish office in Malaga. This contact center will be a multilingual hub that will serve clients in eight languages and employ 250 people.

Tesla, the U.S. based electric car company, opens a dealership in Malaga. It is Tesla´s 5th location in Spain and the 1st on the “Costa del Sol.”

Malaga at a Glance

Malaga was the Spanish province with the highest population increase in 2020. The province registered 12,747 more inhabitants, of which 7,430 had non-Spanish nationality. The British led the migratory flow, with 5,050 citizens who settled in the province, according to the INE's Migration Statistics. The province had 1,696,252 inhabitants as of January 1, 2021 and the Spanish population stands at 47.4 million people.

The Digital Enterprise Show (DES) is moving to Malaga for the next 5 years after 5 successful editions in Madrid. DES will be more experiential, more revolutionary and will collaborate in establishing the digital HUB of southern Europe in Spain.“ Alberto Planas, Director General DES. The City, Provincial and regional government signed the agreement with the organizers of DES on May 19 to support the next edition which will take place in Malaga on June 14-16, 2022.

Malaga was the first peninsular port to receive a cruise since the pandemic. On Tuesday, June 15, Malaga enthusiastically welcomed the Mein Schiff 2, from TUI Cruises with approximately 1,000 passengers. The concept of 'bubble cruise' guarantees the maximum safety of cruise passengers and residents by strictly following health protocols. 50 other cruise ships plan to dock in Malaga this year.

Vaccinations are going well. 24,325,902 people, 51.3% of the Spanish population, have their 1st shot and 33.5 % have the complete vaccine. As of Saturday, June 26, masks are not required in outdoor spaces, as long as you can maintain a personal distance of 1.5 meter. Wearing a mask remains mandatory indoors, on public transportation and for outdoor events or gatherings where people are closer than 1.5 meters.


Logistics Sector

Malaga province increased its exports by 35% in April 2021 compared to the same month last year to 209 million euros.

Malaga Port freight traffic increased 14.7% during the first quarter of this year.

Hybrid Events

The 10th edition of Transfiere, the European Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation took place in Malaga on April 14-15. More than 2,000 people, 200 speakers and 30 universities participated in a hybrid format of this event which brought together professors and industry experts to discuss AI, digital transformation, 4.0 industry, open research and innovation, and public procurement of innovative solutions.

Executives and business people from the entire Andalucia autonomous community gathered on May 6 at the Malaga Trade Fair and Congress Centre to talk about artificial intelligence, economy, geopolitics, uncertainty or disruptive technologies in the 11th edition of Andalucía Management.

The 24th edition of the Malaga Film Festival took place June 3-13 without a red carpet, but had almost 70,000 spectators, actors and actresses participating in its projections, activities and exhibitions.

CM Malaga - Cities & Museums International Trade Fair took place June 21-22 in Malaga. More than 1,000 registered professionals from 700 international cultural and artistic institutions explored new forms of digital interaction with the public and technological advances to improve the user experience and efficiently manage exhibition spaces.

In preparation for the Mobile Week Malaga in December, a delegation from the City participated in 4Y4N, a startup event within the Mobile World Congress.
